10 Simple Ways to Make the World a Better Place

We long for a kinder world, a caring world, a safe world, a world in harmony. We look into the eyes of strangers and hope they see in us a person who cares.  How can we be a part of a change? A change for which the majority longs if it were safe to let it be known. You may say, ”But I am only one person.”  Yes, and there are 7.9 Billion people living in this world.  People, basically much like you and me, with a longing to be loved, to love and to know truth, seeking a commonality with mankind.  Individuals seeking joy and a purpose for their lives. Yes, the masses long for peace and understanding. And I am one of those 7,900,000.000 reaching out to be understood. I am among those trying to make a positive difference so that together we can indeed make the world a better place. Where do we start?  Let’s look at 10 simple ways to make the world a better place.

  1. Be Kind to Others

The point in being kind is not just to pay back a kindness, but to pass it on. Of all the things you can be in this life, choose being kind as the most essential, the one with the most impact, the outstanding healer.  I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will remember how you made them feel. Read What is Kindness and Why Does it Matter?

Kindness is like gold. Kindness is like a soothing balm. Kindness is like a drink of cool water to dry lips. Kindness is of exorbitant value, yet can be extended freely. It is priceless but the supply is never exhausted. It is ours to use and share and be comforted in its worth.

2. Ditch a Critical Spirit

“Let your conversation be gracious and attractive.” Col. 4:6

A critical attitude marks the end of any attempt at a congenial, peace building conversation. Learning to listen, acknowledge, and divert antagonistic discourse is the foundation for team building and empathy. The ability to open a meeting of the minds demands a mental and verbal atmosphere of listening and consideration.

Being a peace maker, while still holding to your beliefs, is an art to be attained. A cool head and a load of wisdom are needed. This reflects a maturity to which we likely all aspire.

3. Be Dependable

A good reputation – whether it be in business or in your personal life – takes a lifetime to build. It can be destroyed in five minutes.

Do your business and conduct your personal life in such a way that those who know you best would find it difficult to believe a degrading rumor about you. An army of these people of good repute can change our world.

We should protect our reputation as we build character. People of integrity better our world. Let us seek to be that type of person.

4. Be Grateful

Refrain from slander – seek to build up others. Encourage others. Recognize the blessings that are yours and be thankful. Develop a thankful heart and spirit. Recognize from whom came the blessings.

Bless others with the overflow into your life. A generous person is of all to be appreciated. What a better world would this gratefulness reflect. May I always remember to be a thankful person in this amazing world.

5. Be Generous with Compliments

Even a stranger appreciates and responds to a genuine compliment. Just a sincere complimentary remark on one’s appearance, on an observed uplifting action, a calming demeanor, or of an observed kindness shown to someone.

A pervading warmth is shared when a sincere compliment is voiced. And the compliment affirms the behavior addressed. We all benefit and flourish in that atmosphere.

Let us be free with sincere compliments: this brightens the day for us all.

6.  Develop a Forgiving Spirit

Forgiveness builds a platform on which to build accord and community. Help others by forgiving rather than reacting with vitriol and hatred.

Ultimately, this offers more opportunity of being able to state our case in the future as well as lowers the explosiveness of the situation.

Learning to keep a cool head, having a forgiving spirit, and developing a controlled tongue are the building blocks of negotiations and the prospect of future accord. This constructs a platform for future understanding and growth.

I find it difficult to always show a forgiving spirit. I sometimes have to struggle with this for days – I hope those are growing pains that I feel!

7. Develop Your Gifts to Serve Others

Many people never develop the gifts and talents they have been given. Perhaps it is lack of motivation or just laziness.  We are supposed to support ourselves, care for our dependents, and contribute to those who are unable to provide for themselves. Determine your strengths and aptitudes. Sharpen your skills. Be a contributor – not just a consumer.

It is amazing what a group of people can accomplish if they come together with a single purpose. Likely every skill needed will be represented. There is nothing that gives satisfaction like a job accomplished, a good day’s work, the culmination of a dream after hours and hours of effort.

We were intended to work, to use our knowledge, and to produce what civilization needs. How doubly blessed to be a part of something innovative and helpful to mankind.  Don’t miss what God intended for you to become in this life.  The world needs you.

8.  Learn to Save

Protect the environment. Save money to take care of your family and your future. Save a tree.  Save clean water.  Save a wayward child.

Look for the value in everything and then protect that value.  That is what saving is all about.  We are the caretakers of this world and its inhabitants. We have been entrusted with caring for the world and all of its beauty and produce. Whatever we do to save and protect these assets is in line with the Creator.

9. Volunteer in Some Effort

For the benefit of healthcare, education, exploration, spiritual understanding and the spirit of sharing, volunteer in some manner.

Nothing promotes an atmosphere of community, of good feelings, and of friendship more than volunteering. For every hour we volunteer or for every dollar we donate, we receive a thousand-fold in satisfaction and brotherly love.

Until you participate as a volunteer, you will never know the rewards. Volunteering has a healing and a growth factor, accompanied by a lifting of one’s spirit and a feeling of being wrapped in love.

Volunteering is not easy.  It may demand your all.  But the rewards you reap from volunteering cannot be weighed.

Follow up by leading a friend to join you in the realm of volunteering and donating. A strong bond will develop between the two of you that will enrich your life further and give you purpose.

10.  It’s Our World

There are so many ways to add to the beauty and the joys of this world. We must protect the freedoms of education and worship; the strengths of family life; the welfare of all; and the right to protest. Let our thoughts be of peace and forgiveness.  Let us strive to learn to disagree without fighting so that we may be heard.

We must help others to reach their goals and be self- supporting.  We must not judge others. But we need to be ready to give an answer to anyone who asks about the hope and belief that we possess. Let us be gentle and respectful in we do.

We CAN Build a Better World

We can build a better world. It may take a better you, a better me. By yielding to the reign of Christ Jesus in our lives, we are on the path to being a contributor to the betterment of living on this earth.

I hope you will continue to add to this list more ways  we can work together to care for one another and glorify God in all we do. Let’s find our intended place and fill the role to which we have been called. I hope you have found some help with these 10 simple ways to make the world a better place.
