Do not lean on your own understanding but trust God. See what the Bible tells us about trusting God to lead us in our lives.
Proverbs 3:5-6 ESV – Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.
Don’t rely or lean on what we know, our education, our experience and skills, and what we are comfortable with. We would never apply for a job that relies on things other than our education and experience. In the world’s eyes this is just plain foolishness. In the Bible, the Apostle Paul’s case a tent maker became an evangelist and church planter. Also tax collectors and fishermen became evangelists. Will my path look correct and straight according to man? No! But it will be perfect according to God. When we look back we can see a perfect path but we can’t see it when we are in the middle of it.
Trust God Instead of Your Own Knowledge
The knowledge and intelligence of man is different from the wisdom of God. Our worldly education and knowledge is good enough for doing most worldly work, but God knows best. Smart people make dumb decisions all the time. There is a way that seems right, but it leads us to a place of death (spiritual death is separation from God). We laugh at the bad ideas of others, just not our own. We likely still use our knowledge, education, experience and skills, but God’s wisdom supersedes all that and often conflicts with it. Don’t use your worldly knowledge to do Heavenly work, and invite God into our worldly work so it becomes Heavenly.
Trusting God is Hard Sometimes
Distrusting in what we see and trusting in what we cannot see is hard. When bad things happen it strains our trust of God. Also God’s straight path is not the most comfortable path for us. Sin and the world win some battles but God wins the war. Sin and the world satisfies temporarily but God satisfies now if we are focused on Him, and He satisfies in the end. God has never failed me so He is worthy of my trust. In all you do acknowledge God and give Him all glory.
Do Not Lean on Your Own Understanding but Trust God
Lord, help me obey when I don’t understand. Help me surrender what I cannot control.
We are like a young child. We know so little but we trust our parent. Don’t trust the “what”, trust the “who” which is Jesus. Guard your heart, for it is a battleground. We can choose to love God with all our heart, and we can choose to go in the wrong direction. Be careful what you feed your heart. Tell your heart where you should go else it will always go where it has been.
