Are you wondering how to be saved? Do you want to be saved today? Thankfully, salvation is a free gift to all who will believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God. Let’s talk about how you can receive the free gift of salvation.

God Offers Salvation Now, Don’t Delay!

When the Bible says “today,” “the day,” “or acceptable year,” it’s saying the same thing. It means NOW–at this very moment. God doesn’t guarantee we’ll be alive in the next moment, not to mention the next month or year. God offers salvation now so that any delay may be too late!

“Then He (Jesus) rolled up the scroll, and … sat down (in the synagogue). (Everyone’s) eyes … were fixed on Him. (He said), “Today this Scripture is fulfilled in your hearing (Luke 4:20-21).”

Look, now is the accepted time; look, now is the day of salvation.

2 Corinthians 6:2

Why Now?

Do you want to be saved today? Why does the Bible say that now is the accepted time? Was there a time when God’s salvation wasn’t available? If so, isn’t the Bible just stating the obvious? What changed?

It’s Acceptable to the Lord

Early in His ministry, Jesus gave a sermon in His hometown of Nazareth based on this same idea:

“The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, because He has anointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor … to heal the broken-hearted, … (to announce freedom) to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed; to preach the acceptable year of the Lord (Luke 4:18-19).”

Jesus Brought Good News

At His First Advent

As a point of emphasis, Jesus famously sat down after reading the passage quoted above. He quoted Isaiah 61:1-2 and stopped reading in the middle of the verse. Most likely, the listeners had never seen a rabbi do this—at least not as an intentional teaching point.

Jesus quoted the part of the passage that referred to His First Advent. When He came, He brought the good news that He, Israel’s long-awaited Messiah, was offering them the Kingdom of God. That was new.

Not His Second Advent

The rest of the passage, which Jesus ignored, talks about what He will do during His Second Advent. And that advent is still future, so He sat down instead of reading it. The Master Teacher was at work.

Don’t Have a Hard Heart

Therefore, as the Holy Spirit says: “Today, if you hear His voice, do not harden your hearts (Hebrews 3:7-8).

This passage warns us not to harden our hearts like the Israelites did when Moses led them through the wilderness to the borders of their Promised Land. God told them to enter the land and defeat the inhabitants, but they refused. The inhabitants of the land intimidated that faithless generation. They ignored the fact that God was on their side.

Enter Jesus’ Rest

“Since therefore it remains for some to enter it (God’s salvation rest), and they to whom it was first preached did not enter due to unbelief, again He establishes a certain day, “Today,” saying through (King) David, after so long a time, … “Today, if you will hear His voice, do not harden your hearts (Hebrews 4:6-7).”

You Can be Saved TODAY!

Jesus’ eternal redemption was also something new. But no more. It is available TODAY. This moment! Do you want to be saved today? The writer presents Jesus’ salvation rest. By dying for our sins and rising from the dead, Jesus has achieved eternal salvation. God tells us to enter it TODAY. And He offers it without cost to those who believe in Jesus’ Name. “For He (God) says: “In an acceptable time I have listened to you, and in the day of salvation I have helped you.” Look, now is the accepted time; look, now is the day of salvation (2 Corinthians 6:2).”
