WWJD?
What would Jesus do? This was the old motto some followed to ensure they made righteous decisions. Does acting like Jesus get me into heaven? Let’s discuss this question.
Does the Bible Promise us Heaven for Following Jesus?
A Gift or a Boast?
Does the Bible promise us heaven for following Jesus? If so, we could work ourselves to heaven and live a life worthy of it. However, if we did that, we would have something to boast about. But the Bible tells us that’s not the case:
“For by grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not of yourselves. It is the gift of God, not of works, so that no one should boast” (Ephesians 2:8-9).
A Destination or an Honor?
When Jesus calls us to follow Him, it’s not to ensure our admission to heaven. Rather, this call is directed toward those who have already accepted Jesus as their Savior. The issue for God’s sons is not our eternal destination; it is about how we live our lives in a way that honors God, so that He, in turn, will honor us. Jesus said,
“If anyone serves Me, he must follow Me. Where I am, there will My servant be also. If anyone serves Me, the Father will honor him” (John 12:26).
Can I Earn My Way to Heaven?
Rules or a Promise?
We cannot lead a good enough life to earn our way to heaven. God hasn’t given us a set of rules that can accomplish this.
“For if there had been a law given which could have given life, righteousness would indeed come through the law. But the Scripture has confined all things under sin, that the promise through faith in Jesus Christ might be given to those who believe” (Galatians 3:21-22).
Why did Jesus Have to Die?
Did Jesus Die Needlessly?
If we could reach heaven simply by following Jesus, then He wouldn’t have needed to die on the cross. He could have lived a perfect life, which He did, and served as our example. However, we can’t live the ideal life that Jesus did anyway; we all fall short. As it’s written:
“For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23).
Forgiveness and Righteousness
In addition to cleansing from sin, it is essential to attain the righteousness of God to enter heaven. This righteousness can only be received through faith in Jesus. As stated in Romans 3:22,
“This righteousness of God comes through faith in Jesus Christ to all and upon all who believe, for there is no distinction.”
Summary
The Bible promises us heaven for believing in Jesus, not for following Him.
Jesus’ call to follow is for those already sons of God through faith in Jesus.
God hasn’t given us a set of rules or demanded a lifestyle to enter heaven.
If we could get to heaven by following Jesus, then He wouldn’t have had to die on the cross to remove our sins.
We can only achieve the necessary righteousness of God by receiving Jesus’ righteousness by faith.
