What if I Owe More than I Can Pay?

But what if the debt you are concerned about is not financial? Do you have a feeling that you are in an even greater debt? Is there something eating at you that often tells you that you are not your own? Does it seem like all the bad things you have done and keep doing are piling up a huge debt of guilt? Has this left you feeling hopeless and out of control? These bad actions are called sin. The Bible is clear,

For all have sinned and fall short of the Glory of God.

Romans 3:23

And then it also says,

The wages of sin is death…

Romans 6:23

It sounds pretty hopeless, doesn’t it?  All of us have sinned and we can’t reach God with that sin. Perhaps this debt of sin is more than we can overcome. How do I get out of debt to live debt free?

What to do When Your Debt Feels Hopeless

This kind of debt has a solution, though. You can read about it in the Word of God, which is the Bible. In the Bible, we read that God created mankind in His own image. He created us to have a great relationship with our Holy Creator God. In the beginning God came and walked with man. The first man, Adam, had a personal relationship with God. People had not yet sinned. But when the first man and woman broke the command of God, or in other words, when they sinned, that relationship was changed forever.

When we break the commands of God, that sin is a debt. Sin takes away the free gift of God. That free gift is to walk with Him. It allow us to have a personal relationship with Him. Because of His great love for us, God gave us ways to be made right with Him. Throughout history, men have made sacrifices in order to try to please God. In the Bible the people were given a sacrificial system that covered sins temporarily to pay their debt of sin. But the sacrifice only paid the debt until there was a sin again. No matter how hard they tried, mankind could not pay off all the debt of sin. But how do I get out of debt to live debt free?

Your Debt Has Been Paid!

God loves us more than you can imagine. He created us to love us and to have us love Him in return. He really wants us to know Him and His Love. So He sent men, called Prophets, throughout the years to tell people what God was planning. To tell man how He was going to pay the debt of sin once and for all.

Then, when the time was right, He sent the perfect sacrifice. He sent His son, Jesus, into the world. Jesus is God Himself. God in the form of man. He is as much man as if He wasn’t God at all, and as much God as if He wasn’t man at all. He was born, He lived a sinless life, and He was killed in cruel way, call crucifixion, on a wooden cross.  When He died, He took on all the sin and all the shame of everyone who has ever lived…even yours. He offers you His grace and mercy. It is a free gift!

Great News for a Debt Free Future!

But that’s not the end of the story! In Luke24 we read about it. They buried Him in a tomb, and on the third day, He rose from the dead. Hundreds of people saw Him! The Bible tells how He ascended into heaven and He is still alive! He will come back soon to take those who know Him home with Him to heaven.

Paul, the Apostle, wrote about this in Colossians 2:14. He says Jesus has forgiven our sin. Christ Jesus has “canceled out the certificate of debt consisting of decrees against us, which was hostile to us; and He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross”. So our debt is paid! Your debt of sin is paid! Jesus Himself is the payment for our sins; and not for ours only, but also for those of the whole world! (1 John 2:2)

He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world.

1 John 2:2

The only thing left is for you to accept the gift offered to you. The Bible is clear,

If you confess with your mouth, Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.

Romans 10:9

The Prayer of Salvation

Jesus, I don't know You, and I don't know what Your plan is for me. But thank you for coming to die in my place. I'm sorry for anything I've ever done wrong in my life. I don't understand how You could ever forgive me, but if You really would, I would like to accept your free gift of grace and complete forgiveness. Please come into my life and take control, and help me trust You. In Jesus' name I pray, Amen.
