How do people know God is real? How does God reveal Himself to us? These are great questions! Let’s see what the Bible has to tell us.
What about People Who Don’t Know About God?
What may be known about God is clear to them since God has shown it to them. The invisible things about Him—His eternal power and deity—have been clearly seen since the creation of the world and are understood by the things that are made, so that they are without excuse.
Romans 1:19-20
General Revelation
God has revealed Himself to all people in a universal way termed general revelation. People know there is a God by observing His creation. They clearly see His eternal power and deity:
We Know God Through His Creation
“The heavens declare the glory of God, and the firmament (sky) shows His handiwork.
Day unto day utters speech, and night unto night declares knowledge.
There is no speech and there are no words; their voice is not heard (Psalm 19:1-3).”
Beauty and Organization
We see that the world isn’t random. It has beauty and organization. What many call instinct is the wisdom God gave each being so they can survive.
Wisdom Given by God
How does a monarch butterfly know where to go for the winter? They fly to a particular spot in Mexico yearly to survive the winter before mating and returning to their summer homes. Their brains are tiny, and they’re so light and delicate that the wind blows them off course. Yet, God gave them the wisdom they needed to make this journey.
Not Genetics
Natural scientists give a fanciful explanation for the monarch’s wisdom:
Although they themselves have never flown south before, they will instinctively know where to fly as it’s believed that their sense of direction is passed on to them genetically from their ancestors. Latest research also suggests that the butterflies possess an “inner clock” which enables them to navigate by means of the sun’s position in the sky.

Special Revelation
God’s Word: The Bible
Perfection
God has also revealed Himself more precisely in special revelation. One of those ways is through His word, the Bible:
“The law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul; the testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple;
the statutes of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart; the commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes.”
Psalm 19:7-8
Needed for Salvation
Although general revelation can lead you to God, a person needs special revelation to lead them to salvation:
“You have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise unto salvation through the faith that is in Christ Jesus (2 Timothy 3:15).”

Testifying About Jesus
Though some people come to know Jesus through visions, most people learn about Jesus from the Bible. The writers of the New Testament saw Jesus personally and they tell us how He lived, what He said, and what He did. We don’t need to go up to heaven to bring Christ down or to bring Him up from the dead (Romans 10:6-7). Jesus came from heaven and revealed God already. Jesus died for our sins, rose from the dead, and is seated at God’s right hand. He promises eternal life to all who believe in His Name:
“The righteousness which is based on faith … (and) the Scripture says, “Whoever believes in Him will not be ashamed.”For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek, for the same Lord over all is generous toward all who call upon Him. For, “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved (Romans 10:6, 12-13).”
Jesus Reveals the Father
God perfectly revealed Himself in Jesus Christ our Lord. He told His disciples:
“He who has seen Me has seen the Father. So how can you say, ‘Show us the Father’ ?”
