Does Jesus have the proper position in your life?

How do you put Jesus first in your life? That is a very good question and we are glad you asked! Let’s see what the Bible has to say about making your relationship with God the most important par of your life.

What Position is Jesus in Your Life?

For many Christians Jesus is just one of their many things. Every once in a while they remember to invite Jesus into their busy day and pray about decisions and situations. But many of these people are really the boss of their own life, and Jesus is just a part-time assistant or acquaintance.

  • How does Jesus compete with your other things such as your social media, your sport teams, your current favorite book, your current diet and fitness programs, the secular speakers you listen to?
  • How much of your time and mind does Jesus occupy vs. these other things (idols)? Is the position of these other things above Jesus, and is your need for pleasure and self-preservation at a position above Jesus?
  • Do you listen more to the knowledge of worldly experts and social media friends and less to the Bible?

Do You Listen to False Teachers?

In the city of Colossia in Colossians chapter 1, the church had some negative influences such as leaders with false teaching. The Christians were starting to trust these other false teachers. Paul, living in a prison, wrote a letter of encouragement and correction to the church. He talked about the proper position of the local pastor, himself, Jesus, and the church.

Paul’s and the pastor’s positions

Paul talked well of the local church pastor Epaphras and elevated Epaphras’ position above the false teachers. Paul portrayed himself as a suffering minister of God, who has been praying for the church from their beginning. Paul established his own position to the church, as a servant leader appointed by God. This was needed so the church would receive and listen to his letter, and so they would respect the local pastor.

Jesus’ Position Should be Above All Others

Paul positioned Jesus to be above all others, to combat the false gods and teachings. He talked about Jesus being the firstborn of all creation, He created all things, all things were created for Him, He is the head of the Church, He is the beginning and the first born from the dead. In Him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, and He made peace by the blood of His cross. Paul said Jesus is God, who died for our sins. In elevating Jesus above all other things, Jesus becomes most important.

The Church’s Position

Paul gave the church their position in relation to Jesus. Once they were alienated and hostile, but Jesus reconciled them in His body by His death, in order to present them as holy and blameless if they remain faithful and do not shift away from the gospel. Paul presents them as sinners, saved by Jesus. He also warns them not to accept false teaching.

Give Jesus the Top Position in Your Life

What should this change? He should get more time than all other things. You are like a servant to Jesus, though He calls you His friend. Approach Him daily and early and submit to Him. Read the Bible because it is God’s inspired words to us. Pray daily in the name of Jesus, most humbly, as you face your creator and God. Do not let any knowledge of the world overcome nor supersede the Bible and Jesus. Don’t allow false idols to replace nor diminish Jesus. Nothing else in this world is deserving of our attention like Jesus is. You owe Jesus everything including eternal life, so love Him with every part of you.

The Prayer of Salvation

Jesus, I don't know You, and I don't know what Your plan is for me. But thank you for coming to die in my place. I'm sorry for anything I've ever done wrong in my life. I don't understand how You could ever forgive me, but if You really would, I would like to accept your free gift of grace and complete forgiveness. Please come into my life and take control, and help me trust You. In Jesus' name I pray, Amen.
