One of the criminals who were hanged there was hurling abuse at Him, saying, “Are You not the Christ? Save Yourself and us!” But the other responded, and rebuking him, said, “Do you not even fear God, since you are under the same sentence of condemnation? And we indeed are suffering justly, for we are receiving what we deserve for our crimes; but this man has done nothing wrong.” And he was saying, “Jesus, remember me when You come into Your kingdom!” And He (Jesus) said to him, “Truly I say to you, today you will be with Me in Paradise.”

Luke 23:39-43

How Can I Be Saved by Jesus?

The criminal on the cross expressed his faith in Jesus and Jesus immediately promised him salvation. Salvation itself happens in a moment of time. Jesus saves you the instant you believe God’s promise that you receive eternal life when you trust in Jesus’ Name.

For He (God the Father) rescued us from the domain of darkness, and transferred us to the kingdom of His beloved Son

How Long Does it Take to Get Saved?

The transfer of a believer from Satan’s kingdom to Jesus’ Kingdom happens in an instant of time.

In Him, you also, after listening to the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation—having also believed, you were sealed in Him with the Holy Spirit of promise.

Ephesians 1:13

When Do We Receive the Holy Spirit?

The moment we believe we receive the Holy Spirit, who comes to indwell all believers.

We are sealed in Jesus with the Holy Spirit of promise as a guarantee that we will reach the day of redemption:

Do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.

Ephesians 4:30

Salvation is a Free Gift

Salvation doesn’t come from a lifetime review of your life to see if you are good enough for heaven. No one can live a perfect life and perfection is God’s standard for entrance into heaven. Salvation comes through the One who lived a perfect life, died in our place for our sin, and rose again to life (1 Corinthians 15:3-4). That is the gospel message. We need to be in Christ to be in the book of life.

Some Christians remember the exact day they believed and make that a part of their testimony. But not all know exactly when Jesus saved them. Though salvation is instantaneous, usually it takes time for a person to understand their need for salvation and come to Jesus. Most people fight against coming to Jesus, often because of pride or by trying to deceive themselves. They may be under the Holy Spirit’s conviction for a time, in some cases for years or even a lifetime:

And He (the Holy Spirit), when He comes, will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment; concerning sin, because they do not believe in Me.

John 16:8-9
