Ever seen the mud races/obstacle course runs that were popular prior to covid?  It’s more than just a race. It’s about setting personal goals and smashing them. It’s about pushing your limits to defeat the world’s best obstacles. It’s about teamwork and friendship. It’s about the amazing people you will meet on the course. It’s about the mud, the fire. It’s about creating the memory of a lifetime.  Doesn’t that sound like the perfect life?  A great work experience?   At work, or at home, working with your team and striving to be successful isn’t always a primrose path.   While we all strive to be successful, there will be times where we don’t hit the top marks.  Running hard and fast with little to no vector almost always leads to disappointment.  Disappointment will show itself in fear, guilt, bitterness and rejection.  Let’s break these out and discuss and see what the Bible says about each one as well as how we can work through them and understand how to work through these hot spots when they occur. Let’s consider how to deal with disappointment and overcome the obstacles for success in life.

Fear

Hope deferred makes the heart sick, a sick heart is a fearful heart.  God has empowered us and is with is, he doesn’t want us to be fearful in anything.  He wants us to trust him and lean on him.

For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline.

2 Timothy 1:7

The reason we get fearful is that we are trying to do things on our own.  This happens to all of us, including me.  Let go and let God.  We are told in Philippians 4:6 Don’t worry about anything, instead pray about everything.  Tell God what you need and thank him for what he has done.  After that, go in confidence and let God clear your path.  God has given us many talents and designed you differently than everyone else in the world, you have talents I don’t have, God has a reason for every talent we do and don’t have. Letting go of guilt can be a part of learning how to deal with disappointment and overcome the obstacles for success in life.

Guilt

We can’t be or feel guilty about something and still try to go after our dreams at the same time.  God won’t allow you to be successful and live out your dreams if you have guilt.

My guilt overwhelms me- it is a burden to heavy to bear

Psalm 38:4

God doesn’t want us weighed down with guilt, he wants us bear our burdens, confess your sins, request forgiveness from God!

He was hung up for our hang-ups, leave them at the cross.

Rick Warren

Bitterness

Bitterness will eat you alive. When you continue to dwell in past you can’t go forward.  People are still bitter about things that happened 20 years ago, they are bitter at their friends or parents, some are mad at people who have been dead for years, you know, they don’t care! The dictionary defines bitterness as anger and disappointment at being treated unfairly, resentment.  Who hasn’t been bitter?  We all have.

Get rid of all bitterness, rage, anger, harsh words, and slander, as well as all types of evil behavior.

Ephesians 4:31

The best way to handle bitterness is to talk to God about it, we as broken humans cant do anything about bitterness, we weren’t made that way.  The Bible says in Proverbs 20:22 “I will get even for this wrong.” Wait for the Lord to handle the matter.’  Is this a popular way to deal with it, no.  But it is the way God deals with it. Overcoming the fear of rejection is another way to learn how to deal with disappointment and overcome the obstacles for success in life.

Rejection

People get rejected for a million reasons.  Didn’t get picked till last in a sport, didn’t get that promotion, wasn’t chosen to lead an effort at work?  I hate to tell you this, there are some people that don’t like you.  What??  Its ok!  Christ died on the cross because he was rejected.  Luke 23:18 says “Then a mighty roar rose from the crowd, and with one voice they shouted, “Kill him, and release Barabbas to us!”.  That should put your rejection in perspective to what Jesus went through!  The Bible says in Hebrews 13:5 “Don’t love money; be satisfied with what you have. For God has said, “I will never fail you. “God said he would never leave us, seems trivial sometimes, but at the end of the day, it’s all that matters.  We have that truth that we will never be alone despite what happens!

Moving Forward- How to Drop the Burden

We have discussed all the negatives and how to identify and deal with them, how do we go forward?  It rather easy to do, its not an overnight success, but it is very fulfilling and will release you from all the burdens of disappointment we have discussed so far.

Open your heart

Proverbs 3:5 states:

Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding.

We can’t clean out the disappointment, fear, guilt, disappointment, and rejection, only God can.

Let God heal your heart

Psalms 147:3 says.  He heals the brokenhearted and bandages their wounds.  He is the Great Healer, let him heal you!  The kind of heart healing that God provides cannot be accomplished by man, only God can heal your heart.

Make a careful exploration of who you are and listen to your heart

We are going so fast we can’t/won’t/don’t listen to our heart.  Gods plans aren’t the worlds plans for you.  We tend to do what makes us successful, liked and we chase money because that is what the world wants from us.  The Bible says:

For the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil. And some people, craving money, have wandered from the true faith and pierced themselves with many sorrows.

1 Timothy 6:10

What makes you truly happy when you are doing it?  What creates and instant kinship with someone when you find out you have the same shared interest or desire?  That is where God wants you.  He designed you for that. You are different than every other person in the world to do that one thing that creates that happiness in you!

Follow your heart

I recommend reading all of Psalm 119, but one of the key verses to me is Psalm 119: 105 “Your word is a lamp to guide my feet and a light for my path.”  God will make a way for you and clear your path so you can go do what God has for you!  Being in Gods will and doing what you dream about makes you happy and makes God happy, you are doing what he designed you to do, no one else!

Knowing how to recognize the issues, as well as knowing how to work thorough it biblically, will set you and your team to get back up and going forward again.  The ability to move through disappointment quickly and not stay there is critical to moving forward.

Jesus, I don't know You, and I don't know what Your plan is for me. But thank you for coming to die in my place. I'm sorry for anything I've ever done wrong in my life. I don't understand how You could ever forgive me, but if You really would, I would like to accept your free gift of grace and complete forgiveness. Please come into my life and take control, and help me trust You. In Jesus' name I pray, Amen.
