How to Find Peace of Mind in this World

Many of us are struggling with how to find peace of mind in this world. Is there any peace to be found?  Is our life devoid of hope for peace?  Not if we understand that peace is not completely dependent upon circumstances. The norm for the majority is not a peaceful life. The average life is filled with worry and anxiety. We may ask is there any way to find a calming, quiet peace in the middle of all this?

Do you live with a mind full of unrest, clamor, and fear? Have the outer forces become controllers of your thoughts and choices? Do you feel powerless to take a deep breath, entertain a joyous thought, or feel the freedom of stress?

If you are in need of inner peace, we invite you to watch the GREAT NEWS FOR YOU Video on this page.

Do you long for the absence of stress in your daily life?

You are not alone in wondering how to find peace of mind in this world. In this noisy and boisterous world, with unrest and uncertainty surrounding us, we all are seeking to find peace in the midst of the chaos.

Peace Is Not a Dulled Consciousness

Peace is a determined and controlled freeing of the mind. It is the release from being controlled by the unrest and fearfulness that is trying to fill and conquer our minds.  Peace is not simply to try to dull the pain and anxiety – peace is the answer for the angst.

Peace is not an absence of war. Peace is a virtue, a state of mind, a disposition for the good of all, for confidence, and for justice.

In this World We Crave Peace

Peace, Peace, we all want peace. We yearn for peace. We pray for peace. Peace has many meanings.

Of course, we all wonder  how to find peace of mind in this world. – the absence of warring and hostilities that causes the destruction of countries and their people.

Peace is not merely the absence of war but the presence of justice, of law, of order —in short, the presence of government.

Albert Einstein

Peace may mean the removal of chaos in the world at large with all people living under laws benefitting all peoples. Peace is an active word. Why are we so passive in seeking it?

We Long for Peace in Our Own Country

Peace in our country is paramount in our thinking – we long for and pray for that peace.

If you love peace, then hate injustice, hate tyranny, hate greed — but hate these things in yourself, not in another.

Mahatma Gandhi

This peace calls for self-examination – do we really hate these thoughts and actions in our own lives? This longing motivates us to be involved in service and compassion with our own people to attain a level of peace in our own nation.  This is a worthy use of our time and gifts. This is our active peace.

So, are we to be peacemakers and benefit providers – not just recipients of these things from others? Is peace then an active rather than  passive word? As Gandhi wrote – hate those things in yourself that do not promote peace.

What Does Peace Mean?

The word peace has many meanings. It is the word we use to describe the normal, non-warring condition of a nation, or a group of nations, or the world at large. Peace may refer to an agreement or treaty between warring or antagonistic nations or groups, designed to end hostilities and bring about peaceful relationships.

It is the sought-after state of mutual harmony between people or groups, especially in personal relations. It is the desirable atmosphere of our everyday relationships. We seek this harmony or peace in our families, friends, and neighbors. It is the essence of unity, respect, and love for our fellowman.  It is the personal peace that we long for and the peace that helps us sleep at night.

The Biblical Foundation of Peace

At the heart of the Old Testament is the testimony to shalom, that marvelous Hebrew word that means peace. But the peace that is shalom is not negative or one-dimensional. It is a positive force. It is much more than the absence of war. Shalom is harmony, wholeness, health, and well-being in all human relationships.

Peace is the natural state of humanity ordained by God. It is harmony between humanity and all of God’s good creation. It is the peace we long for even if we cannot put it into words. The way “shalom” is used does not mean to feel calm, nor does it mean the absence of conflict.

Instead, shalom peace is the result of right relationships with God, with one another, and with creation. The concept of peace is wholeness in all of life. Completeness.  Satisfaction. We crave a quiet and calm mind, yet we struggle to attain that. We long for an inner peace. We crave shalom in our lives.

We are created to host that peace in our lives. Jesus said,

Peace, my peace give I unto you.  Not as the world gives you peace. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.

That peace is a gift waiting for us to recognize and receive. So, we are promised that peace. The peace “that passes all understanding.”  The peace that takes us through the darkest days and the most terrifying and soul wrenching nights of our lives – the peace  that is promised as a gift – an inner peace.

What is Inner Peace?

Inner peace (or peace of mind) refers to a deliberate state of psychological or spiritual calm.  A calm despite the potential presence of stressors that inevitably enter our lives.  Purposeful living at its best.

Inner peace comes in knowing ourselves, recognizing our potential, and committing our lives to a higher purpose. It may be the freeing of the mind from annoyances, distraction, anxiety, an obsession, a fixation, or the like.

Inner peace is tranquility, a serenity of soul and purpose.  It may mean the freeing of our minds to be able to make clearer decisions, to know ourselves better, to see with clarity the beauty of life.

Inner peace allows us to forgive those who offend us and to attain the deeper peace that forgiveness provides.

Inner peace frees us from those who may be trying to control us, or those who set what they think should be  our standards and goals. It is denying someone else the right to control us. It is the right to be our own person, seeking the greater good for ourselves and others.

Inner peace frees us to be who God intended.  Free to live with joy and forgiveness.  Free to interact with others in a relational manner.  Free to be assertive and to make our own decisions rather than being controlled by others.

Free from trying to please everyone, but rather to please the God who loves us and wants to give you and me the peace we seek.  A freeing from stress, not with alcohol or drugs, but through a relationship, is the beginning of peace.

Peace Is Not the Absence of Stress

Peace is not the absence of stress; it is the presence of Jesus in our lives.  He calms the waters and strengthens us, resulting in an inner peace that changes our own personal world. He is the answer to  how to find peace of mind in this world.

Choose to live your life as the person God is making. Avoid chasing the things that our society has deemed most important but only add more stress to our life.

Let us set limits on our time so that we can spend time outdoors and be refreshed with the beauty and wonder of nature. Let us make sure that our families have a fair share of our time and attention. Let us learn to schedule time for the variety of demands in our lives, keeping them in a healthy ratio.

Let us give our minds time to rest and be restored. Let us spend time with our God and allow his love and peace to fill us.
