“It is appointed for men to die once, but after this comes the judgment” (Hebrews 9:27).
What Does the Bible Say About Fear of Death?
The Bible tells us what the average human life span will be. So, we’re wise to number our days to apply our hearts to wisdom, understanding we won’t live forever (Psalm 90:12):
“The years of our life are seventy, and if by reason of strength eighty; yet their length is toil and sorrow, for they soon end, and we fly away” (Psalm 90:10).
Jesus gave us the following advice, telling us why some people should fear death:
“Do not fear those who kill the body but are not able to kill the soul (anyone but God). But rather fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell” (Matthew 10:28).
Many people think the one who can destroy body and soul in hell is Satan. But Jesus meant God the Father. He created us, and He alone determines our destiny after death, and we should fear Him:
“Therefore we should be more attentive to what we have heard…” (Hebrews 2:1).
Is it Normal to be Afraid of Death?
Before Jesus died and rose again, Satan had the power of death. There was good reason to fear death before Jesus rose:
“(Jesus) likewise took part in these (flesh and blood), so that through death He might destroy him who has the power of death, that is, the devil, and deliver those who through fear of death were throughout their lives subject to bondage” (Hebrews 2:14).
For those who haven’t put their trust in Jesus for eternal life, the benefits of His victory aren’t applied to you. So, there’s still reason to fear death.
“I (Jesus) am He who lives, though I was dead. Look! I am alive forevermore. Amen. And I have the keys of Hades and of Death” (Revelation 1:18).
How to Get Over the Fear of Death
Compared to what the Bible calls ‘the second death,’ it almost tells believers that we shouldn’t be concerned at all about death (the first death, our earthly life). ‘The first resurrection,’ is when God resurrects every believer who ever lived. The Bible calls believers blessed. The first death is temporary, and everyone will die. But believers will be resurrected to never die again:
“Blessed and holy is he who takes part in the first resurrection. Over these the second death has no power” (Revelation 20:6).
The separate resurrection that comes after the first is for all unbelievers, and they will suffer for eternity. So, there’s still reason for unbelievers to fear death.
Will We Ever Know What Happens After Death?
The Bible promises that those who believe in Jesus enter His presence immediately when they die. Colloquially, believers go to heaven. The Apostle Paul wrote:
“I say that we (believers) are confident and willing to be absent from the body (die) and to be present with the Lord” (2 Corinthians 5:8).
Paul said believers are willing to die because they know they’ll be with Jesus. Believers don’t need to fear the first death.
Harry Houdini was a famous escape artist. He made daring escapes from straightjackets and chains. Before he died, he promised that if there was any way to appear to the living, he’d find it.
For years, his followers held vigils while waiting for his appearance. But he never appeared.
Some people try to reach the dead through sorcery. These attempts are dangerous and forbidden by the Bible:
“There must not be found among you anyone who … uses divination, or uses witchcraft, or an interpreter of omens, or a sorcerer, or one who casts spells, or a spiritualist, or an occultist, or a necromancer (someone who contacts the dead) (Deuteronomy 18:10-11).
Where Do We Go After Death?
Believers go immediately into Jesus’ presence. They have no reason to fear death.
Unbelievers have reason to fear. They go to a place of torment called Hades. Jesus told the parable of The Rich Man and Lazarus, which described conditions in Hades: It’s a place of torment; people are in flames and wish for water to cool their tongues (Luke 16:23-24). These unbelievers don’t want their relatives to end up in Hades (Luke 16:28). They want someone to bring their friends the saving message.
After God’s final judgment, He will cast all unbelievers into the lake of fire that was prepared for the devil and his angels (Revelation 20:11-15).
