Your enemy is not among men, but he is Satan and his demons. These are the former angels who rebelled against God and were cast out of Heaven. They are already defeated and they know it. It is their desire to take as many souls as they can with them to the everlasting Hell. Influencing Christians to dim our light to the world is one of their greatest tricks. Overcoming this spiritual battle is only possible when we walk closely with God and trust in Jesus to fight our battles for us. Let’s talk about overcoming Satan and how to know your enemy and recognize what he is up to.
What Does Satan do Us?
Satan is the father of lies, and he practices deception, confusion, distraction and isolation. He tempts, questions God, and questions our identity. He targets our unsaved sinful souls/minds including our emotions. He gets us alone and questions us mentally so we use human logic. He gets us to forget our saved spirit and the Holy Spirit in us. He disguises himself as an angel of light, and he gets us to focus on entertainment and self-preservation. He wants us selfish, money-hungry, power-hungry and sex-crazed.
Our Response to Satan
The first step is knowing our enemy and recognizing his attacks. Since we listed out and know what Satan does, what do we do about it?
If a feeling is not Biblical, then it is either from our sin nature or from Satan; we must combat either source. If the attack on us relates to money or sex, run from the enemy; if we dwell in the temptation too long we sin. Every other attack we can stand up to it and combat it.
We need to choose to live in the spirit, which is a focus on God. We need to pray frequently and ask for God’s help to overcome temptations.
The Whole Armor of God
Ephesians 6:10-18 ESV
Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm.
Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and, as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace. In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one; and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God, praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. To that end, keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints.
So our armor is really Jesus battling Satan through us, His Body.
It is Biblical truth, Jesus’ righteousness in us, Gospel of peace (center your life on the Gospel which is the story of the death and resurrection of Jesus), faith (hope + assurance) in God, salvation (confidence in our assurance of salvation), the Holy Spirit in us, the Bible, and our prayers including supplication which is praying for others.
