Do you wonder how to pray to God? Our connection to God is the most important relationship in our lives. He is the answer to all of our questions and will provide all of our needs. We can approach Him with our requests, our fears, our hopes, our sorrows and with our praise. Let’s talk about it.

Paul gave instructions to the Colossian church on how they should pray. We can peek in on them and see how this can apply to us.

Colossians 4:2-3a ESV Continue steadfastly in prayer, being watchful I’m it with thanksgiving. At the same time, pray also for us.

What Does it Mean to Pray Steadfastly?

Steadfast means firmly fixed, not changing, firm in belief. This means we should follow a routine, with fixed dates and times, with regular attendance.  Following a regular routine creates a habit. Even when we don’t feel like it we still pray. Keep doing it until you form a strong habit, then it will be much harder to stop doing it. I faithfully ate low carb food for 2 years and lost a ton of weight. What have you done like that successfully?  Maybe you worked out for a year to get in shape to try out for a sports team. With the same seriousness and rigid discipline, pray. This is how to pray to God.

1 Timothy 4:8  ESV  for while bodily training is of some value, godliness is of value in every way, as it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come.

Watchful Prayer

Watchful means on alert, vigilant, closely observant, focused. Give God the best of your day. Stay awake, get in or create an environment free of distractions. Each of us are different and the best place for prayer may be at a desk, alone in nature (like Jesus), in a closet, lying in bed, sitting in a comfortable chair, etc. The best time for prayer may be first thing in the morning, late at night, randomly throughout the day, etc. Most people concentrate better in total quiet, but others concentrate better with background music. Do what works best for you.

Matthew 6:6 ESV  But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.

Pray With Thanksgiving

When we give thanks we are reminded of how much we already have, the blessings from God, and how God provides for all our needs.  Do we really ask God for what we want that is not a need?  Giving thanks changes our prayer.  We pray more for other people vs. ourselves. We give God the glory He deserves. Our prayers are more worshipful. This is how to pray to God.

Philippians 4:6 ESV  do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.

Pray for Others

Paul asked the church for specific prayer requests. This shows Paul really believes that God can and will answer prayers. Paul also asked for prayers that can only be answered supernaturally. It may surprise you but churches and some Christians who deemphasize the Holy Spirit may pray less, and focus on the good prayer does for the praying person.  They believe less that prayers including supernatural ones are really answered.  They pray little prayers, and they believe the least you can do is pray. Don’t let your fears limit your prayers. Pray big supernatural prayers and believe that they will be answered.  We are to pray in the Spirit and the Holy Spirit prays for us, so pray God-sized prayers that are God’s will.  The most you can do is pray.

1 John 5:14 ESV  And this is the confidence that we have toward him, that if we ask anything according to his will he hears us.

James 5:16 ESV Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working.

“God, I know I’m a sinner, and I ask for your forgiveness. I believe Jesus Christ is Your Son. I believe that He died for my sin and that you raised Him to life. I want to trust Him as my Savior and follow Him as Lord, from this day forward. Guide my life and help me to live according to your plan for me. I pray this in the name of Jesus. Amen.”

The Prayer of Salvation

Jesus, I don't know You, and I don't know what Your plan is for me. But thank you for coming to die in my place. I'm sorry for anything I've ever done wrong in my life. I don't understand how You could ever forgive me, but if You really would, I would like to accept your free gift of grace and complete forgiveness. Please come into my life and take control, and help me trust You. In Jesus' name I pray, Amen.
