Johns Hopkins estimates that 26% of adults in the United States suffer from a diagnosable mental illness. The number of people who feel hopeless and that life is too difficult or hopeless is even more than that. I have known people that have taken their life because they feel hopeless in this world. Much more often, I know people who do hard drugs and alcohol and destroy their marriages, families, careers, and lives because they feel hopeless.

I know how being hopeless feels, for many years I wish I would’ve never been born and consistently fantasized about ending my pain permanently. I have hope now so I thought it may help others if I addressed, “I feel hopeless and I don’t know what to do.” The truth is that this life is very hard for most people and that will probably never change because they do not know where to look. With God life is lived with hope, purpose, and freedom from sin. Cuurio would love to help you if you have more questions or want to know more about your purpose. There also is a sermon that relates to this topic, if you are interested in watching it please click here.

8 Questions About Hopelessness

1. Why do I Feel Empty?

Certainly, some people feel emptier than they should because they have a mental illness. I encourage these people to see professionals, I am not a professional counselor. God can certainly help you, but I believe the main way for God to help you is by seeking counseling and possibly getting medicine for this. For the record, I have been diagnosed with anxiety and depression, so I do not look down on anyone with a mental illness. Still, many people feel empty because this is the nature of humanity.

I believe that we have this empty feeling because God created us to have a relationship with Him. He created us to be in communication with Him and when we are separated from God, we are separated from He who loves us the most. I’m sure you have heard the saying, “God never gives us more than we can handle.” This is unbiblical, the Bible says that God frequently allows us to go through things that are beyond our capacity.

2. How do I Stop Feeling Empty?

I believe the main reason people feel so empty is that they do not have God and therefore have a space in themselves that is empty where God is meant to be. Furthermore, the human spirit is in a state of confusion without God. We try to fill our spirit with all the things of this world, but nothing works. Only God can naturally direct your spirit because communication with His spirit is the only natural way your spirit can function.

3. How do I Gain Hope?

The only hope for humanity is God. God has created us to be in a relationship with himself. When we sin, we separate ourselves from God because sin is a denial of God. When we come to God, believe in Him, admit that we are sinners in need of a savior, and put faith in God we will be saved. Faith is more than just intellectual belief in God. Faith is the action of believing in God and allowing Him to take over your life. This is the only hope that we have. Without this hope, we will always be separated from our creator.

4. Does God Love me and Care About me?

The Bible says that we are made in the image of God. If we think about that for a second, it becomes clear that we are special. The God who created time, space, and matter has allowed humans to be like Him in certain aspects. Most of us if we were God would never allow a race as insignificant as humans to be anything like us. I think people forget what an amazing honor this is and shows how valuable humans are to God. God knit you in your mother’s womb and proclaims that you are fearfully and wonderfully made.

The Bible says that God loves us so much that He has given His son to die for us so that we can be made right with Him. On why Jesus needed to die see here. When we accept Jesus as the bearer of our sins, we are made sons and daughters of God. God has put such extreme value on humans that anyone who has read the Bible but claims otherwise is lying to themselves. God loves you exactly how you are at this second. He wants you to come to Him now, there is no need to change before you do this. God promises eternal life for all that have faith in Him.

5. If God Loves me then Why do Bad Things Happen in Nature?

There are two major kinds of evil that humans are usually shocked by when they hear that God is all-powerful, all-good, and all-loving. One kind of evil is evil that is not created by humans. This category includes natural disasters, diseases, etc. The Bible says that this type of evil is caused by two different sources. The first is that when Adam and Eve sinned against God, they have traded become what the Bible says in a “fallen state.” The world was also plunged into a fallen state and therefore these natural disasters and diseases have become part of the nature of this fallen world. Furthermore, the Bible says that the earth is ruled by Satan and his demons because they have been rejected by heaven and God allows them to. These beings have certain free wills to allow them to commit these acts as well.

6. If God Loves me then Why are People Evil?

This other kind of evil is the one we usually mean, and this is the evil created by humans. I have done extensive research and find that the Free Will Defense is the best argument for this. If you look this up on google every answer will be from a random person that this defense does not work. However, most philosophers, even those who are not Christian (many of whom are very against Christianity even), agree that this solves the problem of human evil. This is because the Bible says that God has allowed humans their own free will. If you search this defense on google you will see quickly that God should not have made a free will, then there would be no evil. Virtually all philosophers agree that without free will, we would not be humans, we would be robots.

To be human free will is necessary, and therefore this argument is rejected by philosophers. Next, you will see the argument that God should have just made it to where people desired always to do good then there would be no evil. This too, while it sounds good, would mean that humans were being controlled by God and therefore would not have free will. The next argument would be that we could retain free will while God could just take all the consequences of the evil out.

For example, someone tries to kill someone whom they are mad at, but the knife or gun simply cannot do any harm because God doesn’t allow it. Therefore, we have free will but nothing evil can happen. It honestly amazes me that people think that this is a legitimate argument. I think you can see clearly that this is not free will because then nothing could happen that wasn’t positive nullifying free will. Ultimately, if humans can have free will the problem of human evil is solved because we can make evil and there are consequences to the choices we make.

7. What if Christians have Treated me Poorly, Aren’t Christians Meant to be Loving?

I want to say that I am sorry for this, and it happens frequently in our society. I have been on the receiving end of this to a severe degree. In Texas, where I live, there are a huge number of people who call themselves Christians. However, the more I learned about God and the more I read the Bible the more I realized that many of these Christians are not living as if they know God. The Bible says that when humans are saved the Holy Spirit enters them and enables and encourages them to follow the Bible.

The greatest commandment given by God is to love God. The second greatest is to love others as yourself. Many of the people I speak to that believe they are Christians are not Christians. They have an intellectual belief in God, but they have not put faith in God, they do not follow the Bible. I do not mean to suggest that Christians cannot treat others poorly, but that those who do so consistently likely are not Christians or at the very least are not following God. For the true Christians that treat others poorly, they are not following the Bible.

All humans sin, whether Christian or not, this is our nature. I am sorry if you have been treated poorly by people who call themselves Christians, I have been an extreme victim of people who are Christians, but I realize now that these people were simply not Christians but believed they were. True Christians who treat others poorly need to repent of their ways and turn to God, they are not following the Bible. God calls us to follow Him, not the people who claim to follow Him.

8. How can God Help me?

God wants to help you be as good as you can be. He wants you to follow Him and His word. Being a Christian is not easy, and the Bible says that you will be persecuted for your belief. However, this is the only way we can have hope, live freely, and be who we truly are. We are all created to bring God glory and to be His servants. The word servant should not scare you though. In heaven, there will be no pain, no crying, no guilt, nor shame. We will be as happy as we can be, and we will be with God and with those whom we love.

The life of a Christian on earth may be difficult because we must not be selfish but rather sacrifice our will for God’s will. In the afterlife, those who do not accept Him and rather live selfishly will be in hell where they will be forever separated from their creator. The gospel is offensive because it says there is punishment for sin. We do not want punishment for our sin, we want to be able to live however we feel. God wants to help you. Speak to Him right now, He is listening. There is a prayer below if you are ready to accept Christ as your Lord and Savior. To understand more about salvation click here.

The Prayer of Salvation

Jesus, I don't know You, and I don't know what Your plan is for me. But thank you for coming to die in my place. I'm sorry for anything I've ever done wrong in my life. I don't understand how You could ever forgive me, but if You really would, I would like to accept your free gift of grace and complete forgiveness. Please come into my life and take control, and help me trust You. In Jesus' name I pray, Amen.
