Is God real? How do we know? Let’s think about these questions through the eyes of a child. This sweet little girl was afraid. Her fears had her asking if demons are real. If God is real, would He protect her from evil? Her anxiety was high, but her father was there to comfort her. Let’s look in on bedtime story time with her loving dad.
It was getting to that time of night. Bedtime. The little girl could hear someone stirring in a distant room and then footsteps in the hall, but tonight, she cuddled up tight inside her blankets and faced away.
Every night, she looked forward to story time with her dad. To this precious time, not one of harsh reality but of imagination and comfort. What wondrous adventures they shared! But not tonight.
He could feel the cloud before entering her room, yet his head snapped back as he entered. “What’s wrong, Biskit?” (‘Biskit’ was her pet name).
But as he sat on her bed, she drew her blankets tighter before turning to embrace him.
Daddy, Are Demons Real?
She knew this wasn’t something he could guess, and she couldn’t hold back her question. Without hesitation, she blurted out, “Daddy, are demons real?”
“Is that what’s torturing you?” he asked. “What brought this up?”
“Can demons torment you and keep you from heaven? Will I spend the rest of my life with them?” Then, with tears flowing, “I’m scared!”
“What to say,” he pondered. Then, after a pause, “Sweetie, bad things happen in this world; evil exists, and so do evil people, and demons are real.”
She immediately demanded, “Can’t you protect me!”
“Your mother and I can to a certain point, but it’s mainly by avoiding evil. And you can help yourself in the same way. Plus, we do pray for you.”
Daddy, is God Real? How do We Know?
Then, quietly, after a prolonged silence, she asked, “Daddy, is God real? How do we know? Have you seen Him or talked with Him?”
“What do you think, Biskit? Do you believe He’s real? Look around. See the stars outside? You see, butterflies and Monarchs are your favorite,” he related as her ears perked up. “You know they migrate thousands of miles to overwinter in mountains in Mexico. And you’ve seen how the wind blows them around, yet somehow, they make it.”
“How big is a butterfly’s brain? Can a butterfly figure out where to fly if God didn’t tell it? Instead of a bedtime story, let’s hear God tell Job how He gives wisdom to animals”:
“Does the hawk fly by your knowledge, and stretch her wings toward the south?
Does the eagle mount up at your command and make her nest on high” (Job 39:26-27)?
We Know There is a God
The Bible calls this general revelation because it’s evidence everyone can see. When we look around at how organized creation is, we see a wise mind and know there’s a God”:
“The invisible things about Him—His eternal power and deity—have been clearly seen since the creation of the world and are understood by the things that are made” (Romans 1:20).
God Gives Us Special Revelation, too.
He tells us about Himself in the Bible. He also revealed His invisible self to us by sending His only Son, born to the Virgin Mary. He named Him Jesus because He would save His people from their sins.
“Jesus also defeated the head demon, Satan. So, Jesus broke their power, meaning those who believe in Jesus don’t need to fear those evil creatures.”
You Know in Your Heart that God is Real
Then, looking her straight in the eyes, he whispered, “But you know in your heart that God is real. Our inner self and our conscience are witnesses. The Bible says only a fool says in their heart, “There is no God.” When someone rejects it, it’s like putting your hand before your face and denying it’s there.”
“Good night, sweetie! I’ll tuck you in, and you’re sealed with a kiss!
