Is God’s Love Unconditional?

Is God's love unconditional, God's unconditional love, God's Love, Questions
good news of jesus

Is God’s love unconditional? The answer to your question is YES.
Maybe the most well-known verse in the Bible tells us that God loves everybody unconditionally:
“For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish, but have eternal life” (John 3:16).

But that doesn’t mean everyone will believe and be saved. Because God is holy, He can only save those whose sins are paid for by Jesus’ shed blood.

We invite you to watch the Great News video on this page to find out how you can believe and be saved, today!

God’s Unconditional Love

Love Demonstrated
The Bible tells us how God demonstrated His love for humanity:
“In this way the love of God was revealed to us, that God sent His only begotten Son into the world…. In this is love: not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins” (1 John 4:9-10).

God Showed Us His Unconditional Love

Loving the Unworthy
The love God demonstrated was unconditional. The Apostle Paul explained our unworthiness by telling us three ‘while we weres’:
***“While we were yet weak … Christ died for the ungodly”  (Romans 5:6) .
***“While we were yet sinners … Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8).
***“While we were enemies … we were reconciled to God by the death of His Son…” (Romans 5:10).

***We were weak. We had no power or authority to save ourselves at the time Christ died for us. According to John 1:12, we now have the authority to become sons of God by believing in Jesus’ Name.
***We were sinners. We all fall short of God’s glory; even our good deeds are filthy rags. But Jesus has “By His own blood, He entered the Most Holy Place (God’s immediate presence) once for all, having obtained eternal redemption” (Hebrews 9:12).
***We were His enemies. Every unbeliever in Jesus belongs to the kingdom of Satan: “He has delivered us (believers) from the power of darkness and has transferred us (when we believed) into the kingdom of His dear Son, in whom we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins” (Colossians 1:13-14).

God Still Loves Us Without Condition

Blessing the Unworthy
God shows His unconditional love because He sends blessings to everyone in the world, including His enemies:
“But I (Jesus) say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you, that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven. For He makes His sun rise on the evil and on the good and sends rain on the just and on the unjust” (Matthew 5:44-45).

Conditional Love

But some aspects of God’s love are conditional.

Receiving its Benefits
The application of God’s love for the world is conditional. God demonstrated His love for the world by sending Jesus to die for us. That (salvation) love is unconditional and eternal redemption is available to all. But it’s only applied to those who receive it by believing.

His fellowship love is also conditional for believers. Jude tells believers in Jesus to:
“Keep yourselves in the love of God while you are waiting for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ” (Jude 1:21).

  • Summary
  • God loves everyone in the world unconditionally.
  • God demonstrated that love by sending His Son to atone for our sins.
  • God loved us while we were yet enemies (undeserving in any way).
  • God blesses everyone by making His sun rise and rain fall on the just and unjust.
  • Some aspects of God’s love are conditional: (1) God only applies eternal redemption to those who receive His Son by believing in Him, (2) Believers must keep themselves in God’s love for continued fellowship.

The Prayer of Salvation

Jesus, I don't know You, and I don't know what Your plan is for me. But thank you for coming to die in my place. I'm sorry for anything I've ever done wrong in my life. I don't understand how You could ever forgive me, but if You really would, I would like to accept your free gift of grace and complete forgiveness. Please come into my life and take control, and help me trust You. In Jesus' name I pray, Amen.
