In John 14, Jesus offers profound reassurance and guidance to his disciples, declaring himself as “the way, the truth, and the life” (v. 6). This Daily Devotional is filled with promises, notably the gift of the Holy Spirit, which provides comfort and empowerment for believers. As Jesus prepares his disciples for his departure, he urges them to trust in God and to find peace in his teachings. Are you ready to accept these gifts and let go of your troubled heart? Read the Daily Devotional on John 13 to learn insights on the Last Supper.
What Does John 14 Teach Us?
John 14 challenges believers to embrace Jesus’ promises fully. The assurance of Jesus preparing a place in heaven, the promise of greater works through faith, and the constant presence of the Holy Spirit are central themes. Jesus’ statement, “I am the way, the truth, and the life,” emphasizes the singular path to the Father, inviting believers to a deeper commitment and understanding. As we navigate our faith, this chapter reminds us to seek the Holy Spirit’s guidance, adhere to Jesus’ teachings, and rest in the peace he offers.
Jesus offers peace and empowerment through His promises. We’ll discover Jesus’ claim as being the only way to the Father. We will also list the assurances Jesus provides: a place in heaven, the power of answered prayers, the presence of the Holy Spirit, and the love of the Father and the Son. These reflections underscore the chapter’s timeless relevance and its capacity to address a troubled heart.
John 14 Commentary by Allen J. Huth
In John 14, Jesus says “I am the way, the truth, and the life” (v. 6). He also promises the gift of the Holy Spirit. Do you accept His gifts, or is your heart troubled? Please read or listen to John 14.
What Does Jesus Mean by “Do Not Let Your Hearts Be Trouble”?
In 1990, concerning John 14 (NKJV), I wrote, “Let not your heart be troubled’ (v. 1). ‘“I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father but through Me”’ (v. 6). ‘He who believes in Me, the works that I do, he will do also; and greater works than these he will do; because I go to My Father’ (v. 12). What a power verse! Greater works than Jesus? In verses 16 and 17, Jesus promises the Holy Spirit.” Quoting verse 23, “‘If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word’. Holy Spirit defined as ‘Helper’ (v. 16), ‘Spirit of truth’ (v. 17), teacher and brings to remembrance” in verse 26, and lastly, “‘Peace’ (v. 27). Let not your heart be troubled, nor be fearful.”
I Am the Way and the Truth and the Life
Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.
In 2005 (NASB), I wrote, “One of the most powerful statements by Jesus recorded in Scripture, verse 6, ‘“I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through me.’ Is it narrow? Is it one-way? No, it’s a wide-open way for all who accept.” I continued, “Jesus empowers us to do greater works than He Himself, according to verse 12. He hears our prayers, verse 14. He asks for our obedience, verses 15, 21, and 23. He sent a Helper, the Holy Spirit. Thank You for sending the Spirit of truth,” referring to verse 17. “Thank You for sending us the Spirit of truth who is with us forever, according to verse 16. He teaches us all things, according to verse 26.”
What Does John 14:27 Mean?
In 2018, I wrote, “‘Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me,’ (v. 1). ‘Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid’ (v. 27). How?
- Our prayers can be answered
- Believe Jesus is preparing a place in heaven for me and will take me there
- We can do greater works while here
- We have the Holy Spirit in this life
- We have His Word to help us
- We are loved by the Father and the Son
- We have His presence so let not our hearts be troubled”
God’s Peace
John 14 starts with one of these amazing verses. “Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me” (v. 1). Is your heart troubled? If so, I just gave a great laundry list out of my journal in 2018 as to how to get your heart out of being troubled. This chapter can do that for us. If your heart is troubled, go back and listen or read this chapter again. Rather than a troubled heart, Jesus offers us His peace.
John 14:6
John 14:6 is a verse I have memorized for many, many years, Jesus saying, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” I mentioned in one of my journals, “Is that a narrow way? Is that one-way Jesus?” I concluded that year, “No, the way was wide open. Jesus offers Himself as eternal life to anyone, anywhere who will believe on Him.”
What Is the Meaning of John 14:12?
However, this verse is also very clear all religions do not lead to the same place. Jesus is the only way to the Father. He said, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me” (v. 6).That is not religion; those are words from the mouth of Jesus Himself. Thus, He cannot be considered only a good teacher or a prophet.
Let’s look at verse 12. This verse was brought up in a Bible study when I was a young guy. When the person brought it up, I thought it cannot be true! It cannot be in the Bible. We cannot do greater works than Jesus. He turned to the Scriptures and I opened my Bible to John 14:12. Let’s read what Jesus says, “whoever believes in me will also do the works that I do; and greater works than these will he do, because I am going to the Father.” What can that mean? Greater works we can do because He went to the Father? But look what follows in the next two verses, “Whatever you ask in my name, this I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If you ask me anything in my name, I will do it” (vs. 13-14). As Christians, do we live with this kind of power? Do we believe we can do greater works than Jesus? Do we believe His promises when He says, “ask anything in my name, (and) I will do it” (v. 14)?I am not a “name it, claim it” Christian. I am a biblical Christian, and I want to believe in the promises offered to me in the Scriptures. I believe this statement is true because Jesus went to heaven. He sits at the right hand of the Father interceding for us, and He sent us His Holy Spirit. He says in verse 16, “And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, even the Spirit of truth” (vs. 16-17). Verse 26, “But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things”. As the Holy Spirit dwells within us, we can do greater works than those Jesus did as He walked the earth.
Next, He reminds us in verse 15, “If you love me, you will keep my commandments.” In verse 23, He says it again, “If anyone loves me, he will keep my word”. How do we express our love for God? How do we express our love for Jesus Christ? By keeping His commandments, by keeping His Word. Do you say you love God? Do you keep His commandments?
Is Your Heart Troubled?
Finally, as we let the Holy Spirit dwell within us, as we let the Word of God dwell within us, Jesus gives us His peace. “Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid” (v. 27). Call on the Holy Spirit, spend time in God’s Word, and Jesus promises us a peaceful heart. Let not your heart be troubled. Let’s pray.
Jesus, thank You for these amazing promises in John 14. Settle our troubled hearts with Your Holy Spirit and with Your Word. Grant us Your peace. Drive us to do greater works than You did while You were here. We do love You. See our love as we keep Your commandments. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
