JOSHUA 19 | Joshua Divides the Land

Joshua 19 Joshua Divides the Land
good news of jesus

In Joshua 19, the division of the Promised Land continues as seven tribes receive their allotted territories. This daily devotional highlights not just the fulfillment of God’s promise, but also the leadership and perseverance of Joshua. As we explore the details of land distribution and Joshua’s final acts of leadership, we are invited to reflect on our own journeys. Like Joshua, who faced both external and internal opposition, we too encounter challenges in pursuing our purpose. Are we confronting these obstacles with the same resilience and grace? As you read or listen to Joshua 19, consider how Joshua’s example can inspire you to overcome your own trials and lead with both strength and compassion. To see how other land was divided for the tribes of Israel, read the daily devotional on Joshua 18.

Joshua 19 Commentary by Allen J. Huth

In Joshua 19, we will see the inheritance of seven more tribes of the nation of Israel. Like Joshua, has God placed opposition in the way of your purpose? Do you fight your opposition with toughness and kindness? Please read or listen to Joshua 19.

What Was Joshua’s Division of Land?

In 1995, at forty years old, I read Joshua 19 and 20 on the same day. Concerning Joshua 19, I wrote, “Land still being divided among tribes.”

At forty-nine years old in 2004, I read Joshua 18 and 19 together, and I shared that journal entry in Joshua 18.

At fifty-eight years old in 2013, I read Joshua 19 and wrote, “Every tribe got an apportionment of land, then Joshua took an allotment at the end. A good leader. He gave everyone something first. Help me not be selfish and realize You will provide for me.” I jotted down a part of my prayer that day, “Possess the land You have for me. Fight for it and subdue it.”

How Was Canaan Divided?

The twelve tribes of Israel have been all allocated part of the Promised Land. Joshua’s work is just about finished. Referring to my English Standard Version Study Bible footnote concerning verses 49 and 50:

Like Caleb, his fellow survivor from the wilderness years, Joshua receives an inheritance among them. By command of the Lord, Joshua is given Timnath-serah. The site is in southwest Ephraim, away from the more formidable cities of the period. Joshua’s reception of an inheritance only after all others have received theirs speaks well of him as a leader. That his city is away from the major power centers may contain a hint that his most active leadership years are drawing to a close (p. 424).

What Does Joshua 19 Teach Us?

Joshua’s mission to conquer the Promised Land and allocate it to the twelve tribes of Israel has been completed in chapter 19 of the book that bears his name. He will have a few things left to do as we finish the final few chapters.

What Important Message Could We Learn from the Story of Joshua?

We learn from Joshua, and these chapters, God purposed Joshua to do a job. Though there was external opposition and internal opposition, he completed the task. I hope you sense God has also purposed you. You may be facing external opposition and internal opposition, but through these chapters, I hope you are encouraged to finish the task.

The external opposition for Joshua was those who possessed the land he had to conquer and get it in the hands of the nation of Israel. The internal opposition was from the very tribes he was trying to help. Sometimes, we too have opposition from the very people we are trying to assist. Do not get discouraged, be a Joshua. Fight the external opposition. Also, fight the internal opposition. Do not give up. Finish the task God has assigned to you. May we do it with a toughness Joshua showed against his external enemies and the kindness he showed with his internal enemies.

Prayer

Father, thank You for the example of Joshua. Might You build those same characteristics in us. A toughness to fight the external opposition and the kindness to work with those we are trying to help who may be opposing us. Through the Book of Joshua, Lord, strengthen us. In Jesus’ name, amen.

The Prayer of Salvation

Jesus, I don't know You, and I don't know what Your plan is for me. But thank you for coming to die in my place. I'm sorry for anything I've ever done wrong in my life. I don't understand how You could ever forgive me, but if You really would, I would like to accept your free gift of grace and complete forgiveness. Please come into my life and take control, and help me trust You. In Jesus' name I pray, Amen.
