Today, we will focus on Psalms 106 and 107 in our daily devotional. These two psalms are longer, and together, they remind us of two vital truths: where we go wrong and how God’s steadfast love endures despite our failures. Psalm 106 reflects on humanity’s tendency to stray—forgetting, rebelling, and even provoking God. In contrast, Psalm 107 reminds us that God’s steadfast love remains unchanging and ever-present. Do you feel the need for His steadfast love today? Take time to read or listen to these psalms and reflect on His enduring faithfulness. To explore God’s faithfulness, read the daily devotional on Psalms 104-105.
Psalms 106-107 Commentary by Allen J. Huth
Today brings us to day twenty-two in our journey through the Book of Psalms. We will look at two psalms, Psalm 106 and 107, because they are longer, Psalm 106, forty-eight verses, and Psalm 107, forty-three verses. Psalm 106 is a reminder of where we go wrong. Psalm 107 is a reminder that as we go wrong, God’s steadfast love lasts forever. Do you need God’s steadfast love today? Please read or listen to Psalms 106 and 107.
How Does God Remain Faithful?
We will look at one journal entry on each of these psalms. On Psalm 106, my journal entry in 2007, “We sin, forget, rebel, tempt God, worship idols, grumble, provoke Him to anger, disobey, anger God, and wonder why He doesn’t hear our prayers or bless us. But even after all that, He remains faithful to us. We should praise Him.”
We, like the nation of Israel, have the same tendencies they did. And we, like they did, wonder why God does not hear our prayer or why He does not bless us. The laundry list in Psalm 106 is a pretty good reminder of the why.
What Is God’s Steadfast Love?
Let’s go on to Psalm 107 and my journal from 2015, “The Lord is good. His steadfast love is forever. What is steadfast? Dependable, rock solid, unchanging, whether we wander away, rebel against His Word, fall through our sinful ways, or get caught up in the storms of life. God’s steadfast love delivers us, and we should be thankful. We are also to be steadfast.”
What Is Psalm 107 Referring To?
The laundry list of sinful behavior in Psalm 106 continues in 107. But praise God for His steadfast love. Let’s go back to that definition of steadfast: dependable, rock solid, unchanging. Lord, thank You for Your steadfast love. Look at these verses on steadfast love:
Oh give thanks to the Lord, for he is good,
for his steadfast love endures forever! (107:1)
Let them thank the Lord for his steadfast love,
for his wondrous works to the children of man!
For he satisfies the longing soul,
and the hungry soul he fills with good things. (107:8-9)
Let them thank the Lord for his steadfast love,
for his wondrous works to the children of man! (107:15, 21, 31)
Whoever is wise, let him attend to these things;
let them consider the steadfast love of the Lord. (107:43)
Is today’s reading of God’s Word applicable to your life? Do you need to have the steadfast love of the Lord in your heart? Reading the scriptures is a great reminder of how we are sinful by nature, but God is steadfast in His love toward us. Reach for His steadfast love today.
