Psalms 26-32 How Can God be Angry and Loving
good news of jesus

Today’s daily devotional is on Psalms 26-32. These psalms reveal many incredible attributes of God, but today, we’ll reflect on two in particular: His anger and His favor. Have you ever experienced both in your own life? Perhaps you’ve endured nights of weeping, waiting for the morning light of joy. As you read or listen to these psalms, consider how God’s anger, though brief, is followed by a lifetime of favor. Let’s dive into these timeless words, finding comfort in His promises and reflecting on His faithfulness. To ponder if God will ever forsake you, read the daily devotional on Psalms 20-25.

Psalms 26-32 Commentary by Allen J. Huth

Today brings us to day five in our journey through the Book of Psalms. We will be looking at seven psalms today, Psalms 26-32 today. There are many amazing attributes of our God described in these Psalms. We will focus on two, His anger and His favor. Have you experienced both? Are you weeping through nights of your life, waiting for joy to come in the morning of life? Please read or listen to Psalms 26-32.

What Is the Meaning of Psalm 29:2?

Those are some long readings, but my notes from my journal in 2007 (NASB) are pretty short.  Concerning Psalm 26, I wrote, “Walk in integrity.” On 27, I wrote, “Spend time in God’s presence. Wait on the Lord.” Referring to Psalm 29, “The voice of the Lord is upon the waters, it thunders, is powerful, majestic, breaks trees, flashes out flames of fire.” Also from Psalm 29, I wrote, “Ascribe to the Lord the glory due His name” (v. 2).

What Is the Meaning of Psalm 30?

From Psalm 30, “For His anger is but for a moment, His favor is for a lifetime; Weeping may last for the night, But a shout of joy comes in the morning” (v. 5). Also from Psalm 30, I wrote, “‘You have turned my mourning into dancing’, referring to verse 11.”

Referring to Psalm 31:23-24, “love the Lord . . . take courage, All you who hope in the Lord.” And finally, from Psalm 32, “Forgiveness. Praise God for forgiveness.”

What Is the Bible Verse about Joy in the Morning?

Let’s take a look at Psalm 30:4-5, “Sing praises to the Lord, O you his saints, and give thanks to his holy name. For his anger is but for a moment, and his favor is for a lifetime. Weeping may tarry for the night, but joy comes with the morning.” The psalmist David certainly experienced God’s anger and His favor. From Bathsheba, to being a man after Gods own heart, David wept and worshipped before God Almighty.

What Happens if God Is Angry?

Have your life experiences left you experiencing God’s anger? Aren’t you glad “his anger is but for a moment”? Praise God, He is a God with a short memory, “For I will be merciful toward their iniquities, and I will remember their sins no more” (Heb. 8:12). If we confess our sins, He will forgive! “His anger is but for a moment” (30:5).

What Does Psalm 30:4:5 Mean?

We, like David, may weep through our nights of sin, rebellion, disobedience, and dark times away from God. “But joy comes with the morning” (30:5). According to my English Standard Version Study Bible footnote on Psalm 30:4-5:

Though there is indeed weeping in the lives of the faithful (sometimes because their misdeeds have incurred God’s anger, and sometimes just because of suffering that comes from living in a fallen world), it comes to an end. Morning stands for the time when God gives relief; it might not arrive until the last day, but it will surely come (p. 973). Yes, mornings of joy will surely come, soon or at the last day! Halleluiah! Thank Him for “joy comes with the morning” (30:5).

Prayer

Father, we are so thankful that Your anger is for a moment, but Your favor is for a lifetime. We are thankful when You turn our mourning into dancing. And we are so thankful for Your forgiveness. Blessed be the name of the Lord. In whose name, we pray. Amen.

The Prayer of Salvation

Jesus, I don't know You, and I don't know what Your plan is for me. But thank you for coming to die in my place. I'm sorry for anything I've ever done wrong in my life. I don't understand how You could ever forgive me, but if You really would, I would like to accept your free gift of grace and complete forgiveness. Please come into my life and take control, and help me trust You. In Jesus' name I pray, Amen.
