These psalms brim with expressions of joy, reverence, and awe for God’s majesty, encouraging us to reflect on how we worship. Do we simply go through the motions, or do we bring our full selves before God with gratitude and praise? Let these psalms lead us into deeper worship, whether through song, prayer, or silent adoration, recognizing the greatness and steadfast love of our Creator. Psalms 92-98 Commentary by Allen J. Huth
Today is day nineteen in our journey through the Book of Psalms. We will take a look at seven psalms, 92-98, all compelling us to worship. How is your worship of God? Please read or listen to Psalms 92-98.
What Is a Powerful Verse about Praise and Worship?
Sometimes the psalms just ring with praise, joy, and worship to the Lord. These seven psalms are like that. They make you want to bow down and worship. They make you want to jump up and praise God. Verses like Psalm 92:1-2:
It is good to give thanks to the Lord,
to sing praises to your name, O Most High;
to declare your steadfast love in the morning,
and your faithfulness by night.
Psalm 93:1- 2:
The Lord reigns; he is robed in majesty;
the Lord is robed; he has put on strength as his belt.
Yes, the world is established; it shall never be moved.
Your throne is established from of old;
you are from everlasting.
Psalm 94:8-11 remind us where knowledge and wisdom come from:
Understand, O dullest of the people!
Fools, when will you be wise?
He who planted the ear, does he not hear?
He who formed the eye, does he not see?
He who disciplines the nations, does he not rebuke?
He who teaches man knowledge—
the Lord—knows the thoughts of man,
that they are but a breath.
Psalm 95:1-3:
Oh come, let us sing to the Lord;
let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation!
Let us come into his presence with thanksgiving;
let us make a joyful noise to him with songs of praise!
For the Lord is a great God,
and a great King above all gods.
And a few verses later, Psalm 95:6-7:
Oh come, let us worship and bow down;
let us kneel before the Lord, our Maker!
For he is our God,
and we are the people of his pasture,
and the sheep of his hand.
Is Kneeling a Form of Worship?
Do you kneel before Him? He is worthy. My personal prayer posture is usually kneeling before the Lord. Is He worthy of you kneeling before Him?
Psalm 96:1-3:
Oh sing to the Lord a new song;
sing to the Lord, all the earth!
Sing to the Lord, bless his name;
tell of his salvation from day to day.
Declare his glory among the nations,
his marvelous works among all the peoples!
Psalm 97:1, “The Lord reigns, let the earth rejoice; let the many coastlands be glad!” And verses 4 and 5, “His lightnings light up the world; the earth sees and trembles. The mountains melt like wax before the Lord, before the Lord of all the earth.” And verse 9, “For you, O Lord, are most high over all the earth; you are exalted far above all gods.”
And finally, Psalm 98:1-3:
Oh sing to the Lord a new song,
for he has done marvelous things!
His right hand and his holy arm
have worked salvation for him.
The Lord has made known his salvation;
he has revealed his righteousness in the sight of the nations.
He has remembered his steadfast love and faithfulness
to the house of Israel.
All the ends of the earth have seen
the salvation of our God.
What Are Your Ways to Worship God?
How is your worship? Do you go through the motions of worship in church or do you engage with the song you are singing to the Lord? Do you have a healthy respect and admiration for God Almighty, or has your relationship with the God of the universe become casual? Do you shout praises to God like you do when your favorite team scores? Or are you reserved and respectful in worship?
None of these psalms are attributed to David, the psalmist. But David understood his God and knew how to praise Him. The author(s) of these psalms did to. Do we?
How Do You Show Honor and Respect?
My prayer is these psalms put worship in our hearts and a healthy respect and honor for who God really is. They remind us to bend the knee, fall on our face, lift our hands, or quietly place a hand over our hearts, as we praise and worship the King of kings and Lord of lords!
Prayer
Yes, Lord, the psalms cry out for us to worship You and praise You. They declare Your glory. They declare Your creation. They declare Your majesty. They declare Your reign over all the earth. They declare that You and You alone give man knowledge and wisdom.
We thank You that through psalms we get a glimpse of who You are and why You are worthy of our praise. So today, may we just simply have a day of praising You. We have much to be thankful for. Might we take a day off from petitioning You, of murmuring toward You, and just simply exalt Your name this day.
Thank You, thank You, thank You for Your many blessings. My heart is filled with gratitude. I just simply sing praises to Your name this day. In the name of Jesus, we pray. Hallelujah! Amen.
