What is the parable of the budding fig tree? Let’s answer that question!
Matthew 24:3
“The disciples came to Him (Jesus) privately, saying, “Tell us, when will these things happen, and what will be the sign of Your coming, and of the end of the age (Matthew 24:3)?”
In context, before telling His disciples this parable, Jesus responded to the questions the disciples asked in the verse above.
The parable:
“Now learn this lesson…: (When the fig tree’s) leaves come out…summer is near.”
Jesus didn’t answer precisely when He would return. But He told them what would happen and what to look for when the time of His return approached. Just like you know summer is near when the trees begin to leaf. Jesus says they’ll see hints as the time comes. They, and we, must be watchful.
Conclusion:
“When you see all these things, you know that it is near, right at the door. (This) generation will certainly not pass away until all these things (happen). Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.”
Jesus used the phrase “this generation” in diverse ways. Indirectly it referred to the wilderness generation who wandered for forty years. Directly, it relates to the current “wicked generation” who refused the Kingdom. But that’s not how He uses it here. Some believe this verse teaches that Jesus returned in AD 70. But Jesus said His return would not be a secret return; rather, it’d be like lightning flashing from the east to the west. It’d be seen by all.
What is the Meaning of the Parable of the Fig Tree?
It’s not clear precisely what He means. But His main point is that He guarantees His return, and those watching and awaiting it will see hints of His approach.
