Christmas Commercialized

When we think of Christmas in our modern societies, many think of evergreen trees, decorations, and Christmas sales. Or maybe Christmas foods like gingerbread houses and candy canes. In other words, we see Christmas commercialized and stripped of its meaning.

Say Merry Christmas!

Many don’t even want people to wish each other a ‘Merry Christmas!” They recommend wishing each other a ‘happy holiday!” They want to make sure other religions’ festivals are recognized because they don’t want anyone to see Christmas as the spiritually unique and distinctive event that it is. Christianity is an exclusive family, and Jesus is the only way to heaven (John 14:6)

Jesus’ Birth on Christmas Changed History!

This is all in the name of inclusion and not offending anyone, but Christmas can’t be stripped of its true meaning. Jesus’ birth on Christmas changed history! That’s reflected in our dating system, which recognizes Jesus’ birth as THE central date in history. It labels the years before Jesus was born as B.C. and the ones after His birth as A.D

So, What’s so Special about Christmas?

God’s Gift

Christmas is the day God gave His greatest gift to humanity. On that day, God’s only Son, conceived by the Holy Spirit, was born to the Virgin Mary.“Therefore the Lord Himself shall give you a sign: The virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel (meaning, God with us)” (Isaiah 7:14).
“He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him up for us all, how shall He not with Him also freely give us all things” (Romans 8:32)?

Giving Gifts

The tradition of giving gifts on Christmas is based on God’s gift of His Son and on the gifts the wise men brought to honor and worship Jesus:
“Wise men came from the east to Jerusalem, saying, “Where is He who was born King of the Jews” (Matthew 2:1-2)?
“And when they came into the house, they saw the young Child with Mary, His mother, and fell down and worshiped Him. And when they had opened their treasures, they presented gifts to Him: gold, frankincense, and myrrh” (Matthew 2:11).

The Eternal King

The Son who became a Baby would grow up King of the Jews (Matthew 2:1-2). And not just the King of the Jews, but the King who will rule over the earth throughout eternity:
“The kingdoms of the world have become the kingdoms of our Lord, and of His Christ, and He shall reign forever and ever” (Revelation 11:15).

The Savior

This Baby would also become the Savior of the world by dying on the cross for the sins of the world. God’s angel had said, “You shall call His name JESUS, for He will save His people from their sins (Matthew 1:21)

The Christ

“Christ” comes from the Greek language and meaning the same as the Hebrew word Messiah. It means that Jesus was the chosen one, anointed by God to fulfill His promises to us:
“For unto you is born this day (Christmas Day) in the City of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord…. You will find the Baby wrapped in strips of cloth, lying in a manger (Luke 2:11-12).”

Jesus didn’t come with great fanfare. He came as a humble child, born in a manger and wrapped in swaddling clothes (strips of fabric):
“The Son of Man came not to be served, but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many (Mark 10:45).

Yet, this humble Christmas Child — when He comes again — He will come with fanfare and irresistible force to rule as King throughout eternity:
“And He shall reign forever and ever” (Revelation 11:15).

The Prayer of Salvation

Jesus, I don't know You, and I don't know what Your plan is for me. But thank you for coming to die in my place. I'm sorry for anything I've ever done wrong in my life. I don't understand how You could ever forgive me, but if You really would, I would like to accept your free gift of grace and complete forgiveness. Please come into my life and take control, and help me trust You. In Jesus' name I pray, Amen.
