What does a true Christian look like? Such a great question deserves a great answer. Look around at the people in your church. What do most have in common with each other that is different from the world? Do the true Christians you know have things in common? Yes, they do. Some things I have observed include hospitality, a Christian worldview and love for each other.
Love in Action – Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good. Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above. Romans 12:9-21
4 Ways to Show You are a Christian
1. How do you treat other Christians?
The scripture mostly lists things that involve how we treat other people. That makes sense because we are supposed to be others-centered. Most of these things I think describe how we are to treat other Christians, but some involve how we treat all people. Here are several ways the Bible calls us to show love to each other.
- Have genuine love for others, which is brotherly, or sisterly, affection. The Bible says the world will know us by our love.
- Show hospitality, which is welcoming. Christians should open their homes and lives to each other.
- Rejoice and weep with others.
- Serve God with other Christians. The Celtic way of evangelism was that unsaved people were attracted to their love, sharing and fellowship with each other.
How do you treat all others – both Christian and non-Christians?
Christians do not consider themselves above others, and they associate with the lowly. They don’t claim to be wise and are humble in spirit. If you are a Christian you should show honor to others, and bless others instead of cursing them. Provide for the needs of others. Live in harmony with others, and as far as they can control, live in peace. Christians are forgiving and overcome evil with good. Read more about overcoming evil with good here.
How do You Agree with God?
Christians hate evil and do good. A spirit filled Christian is enthusiastic in spirit and in serving God. Christians are called children of God when they are reborn, or receive Jesus Christ through the free gift of salvation, but they start looking more like children of God during their sanctification, which is progressive growth.
Be humble, hospitable and social, and spend lots of time with other Christians. Treat other Christians as your eternal spiritual siblings. Do you want to be recognized as a true Christian when people look at you? These are not things you try to have. It is how you will look as you are being transformed to being more Christ-like.
