What does no weapon formed against me shall prosper mean? Let’s answer this and several other questions related to this query.
“No weapon that is formed against you shall prosper” (Isaiah 54:17).
Who Was This Promise To?
One rule for Bible interpretation is to discover to whom a passage is written. In this verse, the ‘whom’ is God’s chosen nation, Israel.
When Did it Apply?
God didn’t promise this about their then-current circumstances but about a future time when the Jews return to fellowship and enjoy God’s covenant blessings.
That time of blessing is yet future. In God’s covenants, He promised the Jews that they would someday permanently possess their Promised Land and live under the rule of their rightful Davidic King. This promised King would rule on David’s throne, and His reign would last forever:
“Your house (King David’s) and dominion will endure before Me (God) forever, and your throne (Jesus’) will be established by the Lord forever” (2 Samuel 7:16).
Who Ensures the Promise?
Jesus is the promised King, the one who fulfills God’s promise. Even before His birth, people understood that He would be that King:
“Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea … wise men came from the east to Jerusalem, saying, “Where is He who was born King of the Jews? For we have seen His star in the east and have come to worship Him” (Matthew 2:1-2).
When God chooses to fulfill His promise, nothing will stand against Him:
“Thus says the Lord God: There shall none of My words be prolonged anymore, but the word which I have spoken shall be done, says the Lord God” (Ezekiel 12:28).
This Applies to God’s People
So, this passage applies directly to the nation of Israel, who will again be God’s people when their Messiah, Jesus, returns to begin His eternal earthly reign. But this promise indirectly applies to God’s people during any age:
“We know that all things work together for good to those who love God …. If God is for us, who can be against us?” (Romans 8:28,31).
God is Our Defender
The main thought is that God is our defender. He is all-powerful, the Almighty God. As believers in Jesus and, therefore, children of God (John 1:12), we enjoy His protective care. According to Jesus:
“The very hairs of your head are all numbered. Therefore do not fear” (Mathew 10:30-31).
God is our Rock
He gathers us under His wings.
He is our Shield.
So, no weapon formed against us will succeed.
God’s Promised Future for His Child
“And I heard a loud voice from heaven, saying,
“Look! The tabernacle of God is with men, and He will dwell with them.
They shall be His people, and God Himself will be with them and be their God.
God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes.
There shall be no more death.
Neither shall there be any more sorrow nor crying nor pain,
For the former things have passed away” (Revelation 21:3-4).
