What is Sin and Why is it so Important?

I have known a lot of people in my life to doubt their salvation because they are addicted to one sin or another. Let me make this clear right off the bat, God loves you and cannot love you any more than He already does. We are not saved by God due to our actions, but rather our faith in God. I often am asked if one thing is a sin or another and I always point them to the Bible. So, what is sin and why is it so important?

I will explain this below but essentially sin is the fulfillment of our will rather than the will of God. Sin is important because without knowing what sin is, you are likely not a Christian. This is because the Bible tells us that the Holy Spirit inside of Christians will convict you of sin. If you claim against the Bible that something is not a sin, you are not following God. If you have any questions please contact me at anytime by sending me a message at johnjr@steeplelesschurch.com. Cuurio has a lot of other questions we would love to help you answer. What is Sin?

Sin is anything that is laid out in the Bible as morally wrong. God has created us and has therefore put inside of us the understanding of right and wrong. We know when we do something wrong, and we feel inside of us that we have just done something wrong. This is what the Bible has designated as sin. It is important to note that while there are laws in the Old Testament that are no longer followed by Christians, such as kosher laws, sacrificial laws, not mixing fabrics, etc., these were not moral laws.

Moral laws never change and are always to be obeyed by God’s people. The laws that are no longer followed were laws that distinguished the Israelites from the people around them and were fulfilled by Jesus Christ. Murder, stealing, adultery, sexual immorality, lust, lying, greed, etc., are all moral sins. These have always and will always be wrong according to the Bible.

Why is it Important to Know What is Sin?

For Christians, it is extremely important because everyone who is saved has the Holy Spirit inside of them. (You can read more about how to be saved here). There can always be doubts about small moral issues and God tells us that we must be true to ourselves in these circumstances, or we commit sin.

For example, in biblical times people used to sacrifice meat to false gods and certain people could eat that meat or it could be sold to bring the temple money. One of the dilemmas in the Bible with sin is should Christians eat this meat or not. God designated in the New Testament that all meat was okay to eat. Some Christians decided it was still wrong to eat this meat. The Bible said that these people may abstain from this meat if they wish and they would not sin and the people who ate the meat would not sin as long as they did not cause the other group to stumble in their faith because they see someone close to God who they consider to be doing something morally wrong.

How Do I Avoid Sinning?

The truth is that all people sin and God still loves everyone. When we are saved by God through the sacrifice of Jesus, we are no longer slaves to sin, but we still sin. Only when we are in heaven will we be free of sin. However, we can avoid sin by following the Bible on what God has for our lives. Praying to God is the best way in my experience to stay away from sin. God knows that we have weaknesses and will strengthen us when we ask Him to. God is faithful and just to forgive when we do sin and the Bible says He forgets our sins.

The Bible says that we should not try to sin because it is detrimental to our lives and because we want to live like God. Rather than avoiding sin because we are fearful of punishment, we should avoid sin because we want to be like God. God loves you deeply and sin is hard to avoid but that’s okay. God wants you exactly how you are right now and will change you into the person He wants you to be if you let Him. Do not wait until you feel as if you are good enough to come to God, such a time will never come. Rather God comes to us and saves us if we allow Him to.

How do I Know I’m Saved if I Still Do Wrong Things?

The difference is not the level of sin but rather your attitude towards sin. If you are saved you will know that it is a sin and want to repent of the sin. Shame and guilt are not a tool of God, but Satan. If you are living in sin but do not care or think it’s not that big of a deal then you are living in an unrepentant life and you are likely not saved.

If you are sinning frequently such as living with your boyfriend or girlfriend but know it is wrong and want to repent then, while you are not living the life God wants you to, you are trying to obey God. In this situation you should try to find some way to get right with God so you can stop sinning, this is the will of God. God does not love people more if they do not commit sins, but we will bring more glory to God.

How Can People Help Me With My Sinful Nature?

God has set up a community of believers who are meant to help encourage each other to stay faithful to God. The Church is meant to be a place where believers can be real with each other. Christians are instructed to share their sins so that people can help them become better Christians. Christians never expect to be perfect, but we can always be better at loving God and loving others. These are the two greatest commandments given by God.

SteepleLess Church would love to be a place for you even if you are not a Christian or just interested. You will not be judged for any reason, but if you are a Christian we will tell you when you are doing things out of God’s will. This is how we grow and become more like Jesus. Please reach out to me for any reason. God bless. Please contact me at johnjr@steeplelesschurch.com.
