What is the unforgivable sin? Many people are also asking “Who is God?“. We all have questions like this, and you have asked a great one! Let’s dig in and find the answer to the question you are asking today.
Truly I say to you, all sins shall be forgiven the sons of men, and whatever blasphemies they utter; but whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit never has forgiveness, but is guilty of an eternal sin”— because they were saying, “He has an unclean spirit.
Mark 3:28-30
Do You Think You’ve Committed the Unforgivable Sin?
Many people believe that. But most people don’t understand Jesus’ warning in this passage. Please read it carefully.
When people read this passage, they ignore what Jesus said before His warning against committing this sin. He introduces the unforgiveable sin by saying, “Truly I say to you, all sins shall be forgiven the sons of men, and whatever blasphemies they utter.…”
Jesus Died for and Paid for All Sin, Past, Present, and Future.
The following is what He said from the cross when He was about to die.
Therefore when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, “It is finished!” And He bowed His head and gave up His spirit.
John 19:30
The Greek word Jesus spoke was “tetelestai.” Translators gave the meaning as “It is finished” in our English Bibles. Jesus was not saying His life was finished. This Greek word was an accounting term meaning “paid in full” and accountants stamped it on a bill when it was fully paid.
God did not send His Son into the world to judge the world, but He sent Jesus so He might save us through faith in His Name.
John 3:17
God Will Forgive Your Sin
God’s intention to save, not condemn, helps us understand Jesus’ warning against the unforgiveable sin.
To put the passage in context, in the first three chapters of the Gospel of Mark, Jesus had done works that proved He was the Messiah. However, the Jewish leaders, who spoke for the nation, were rejecting Him. They saw Jesus as just a man, who blasphemed when He claimed to do the works of God, and as a threat to their power. At the time Jesus spoke His warning, the leaders charged that Satan empowered Jesus’ great works. Jesus rightfully claimed the Holy Spirit empowered Jesus great works. That was their unforgiveable blasphemy.
The unforgiveable sin was attributing the works of the Holy Spirit, who worked His power through Jesus, to Satan. It was not any common sin–or any other sin no matter how wicked–but one specific sin. Many scholars think this sin can’t even be committed today because Jesus isn’t bodily present on earth.
All sins shall be forgiven the sons of men. He invites us to come to Him to cleanse us from all sin, through faith in His Name.
We invite you to accept God’s forgiveness of sin and salvation through Jesus. Please watch the GREAT NEWS FOR YOU Video on this page to find out how you can be forgiven today.
