Who does God say I am? Let’s see what the Bible has to say in answer to your question.
We’re not the product of evolution, either designed or undesigned. The Bible, God’s Word, tells us we’re all descendants of Eve (and Adam):
“The man called his wife’s name Eve because she was the mother of all the living” (Genesis 3:20).
We are Created in God’s Image
God created us in His image. That means we’re like Him in essential ways. We have emotions, can communicate, and are morally responsible beings. Therefore, we will answer to Him for our actions in this life:
“It is appointed for men to die once, but after this comes the judgment” (Hebrews 9:27).
We Are Created to Rule Over the Earth
God created us to rule over the earth He created:
“Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness, and let them have dominion … over all the earth…” (Genesis 1:26)
We lost that right to rule to Satan when Adam and Eve sinned in the Garden. Satan is currently the god of this world (Matthew 4:8-9). But in the God/man Jesus, humanity regained the right to rule when Jesus defeated Satan by dying on the cross and rising from the dead:
“(Jesus said), Now (at the cross) the ruler of this world will be cast out. And if I be lifted up from the earth (by hanging on the cross), I will draw all men to Myself” (John 12:31-32).
When Jesus returns, He will have dominion over the earth forever and ever
“There were loud voices in heaven, saying: “The kingdoms of the world have become the kingdoms of our Lord, and of His Christ, and He shall reign forever and ever” (Revelation 11:15)
We Are Sinners
At some point in our lives, everyone was God’s enemy (Romans 5:10). Until we believe in Jesus we belong to Satan’s kingdom:
“He has delivered us (believers) from the power of darkness and has transferred us into the kingdom of His dear Son” (Colossians 1:13).
God Loves Us
Yet, He didn’t hate us or even ignore us. Instead, He loved us and showed His love by providing the way back to His loving arms:“God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8).
Sons by Creation (only)
At conception, we are all God’s sons by creation, meaning He created all of us. But until we believe, we’re not all God’s sons. We’re under Satan’s dominion by birth.
Sons by Believing
However, God has given us the authority to become His sons by believing in Jesus’ Name:“Yet to all who received Him, He gave the power to become sons of God, to those who believed in His name” (John 1:12).
So, whom does God say we are?
- We’re God’s sons by creation (only) and morally responsible to Him.
- We’re created to rule over His earthly creation, but we lost that dominion to Satan.
- We’re all loved by God, and He showed His love by sending Jesus to die in our place while we were still His enemies.
- We’re born into Satan’s kingdom and need redemption from our sins.
- The God/man Jesus redeemed us by defeating Satan at the cross and restoring humanity’s right to rule (and He will reign forever with His believers).
- We have the authority to become God’s sons through spiritual rebirth by believing in Jesus’ Name.

Who does God say I am?
According to Scripture, your identity is far richer and more significant than anything the world assigns to you. The Bible describes every person as:
- Created in God’s image — with emotions, the ability to communicate, and moral responsibility.
- Made to rule — originally given dominion over the earth, a right restored through Jesus.
- Deeply loved — God demonstrated His love by sending Christ to die for us while we were still His enemies.
- In need of redemption — born into a world under sin’s dominion, but not without a way back.
- Given the authority to become a child of God — through faith in Jesus’ name, spiritual rebirth is available to every person.
What does it mean that humans are created in God’s image?
Being created in God’s image means we are like Him in essential ways that set us apart from the rest of creation. We have emotions, the capacity for meaningful communication, and the ability to make moral choices — and because of that, we are morally responsible to Him for how we live. This is not a burden but a dignity. It means every human being carries inherent worth and significance, not because of what they have achieved, but because of who made them and whose image they bear. “Then God said, ‘Let us make man in our image, after our likeness, and let them have dominion over all the earth.'” — Genesis 1:26
If humans were created to rule the earth, why does the world seem so broken?
Humanity was originally given dominion over the earth, but that right was forfeited when Adam and Eve sinned in the Garden. Scripture describes Satan as currently holding authority over this world as a result. But that is not the end of the story. Through His death on the cross and resurrection, Jesus defeated Satan and restored humanity’s right to rule. When Jesus returns, that dominion will be fully and permanently established — and He will reign forever with those who believe in Him. “The kingdoms of the world have become the kingdoms of our Lord, and of His Christ, and He shall reign forever and ever.” — Revelation 11:15
Does God love me even though I have sinned?
Yes — unconditionally and without hesitation. At some point, every person has lived as God’s enemy through sin. Yet rather than responding with hatred or indifference, God responded with love. He did not wait for humanity to clean itself up before reaching out. While we were still His enemies, Christ died for us — the most extraordinary demonstration of love in all of history. His love is not earned and it is not revoked by failure. It is freely given, and the door back to His arms has been opened wide through Jesus. “God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” — Romans 5:8
What is the difference between being God’s child by creation and being God’s child by faith?
Every person is God’s child by creation in the sense that He made us all. But there is a deeper relationship available that goes beyond being His created beings. By believing in Jesus’ name, a person receives the authority to become a son or daughter of God in a relational, spiritual sense — adopted into His family, indwelt by His Spirit, and secured for eternity. Creation gives every person worth and dignity; faith gives every person belonging. The first is given to all at birth; the second is a gift available to anyone who receives it. “Yet to all who received Him, He gave the power to become sons of God, to those who believed in His name.” — John 1:12
