Who Made God? What a great question! Let’s talk about it.
“Moses said to God, “I am going to the children of Israel and will say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you.’ When they say to me, ‘What is His name?’ what shall I say to them?”
“And God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM, and He said, “You will say this to the children of Israel, ‘I AM has sent me to you (Exodus 3:13-14).’ ”
God Was Not Created
A name represents who someone is. So, God told Moses that He eternally exists. He is other. He alone is not created. He did not have a beginning and will not have an end; He is the alpha and omega.
Everything that exists has a cause. But, there is not an infinite regression of causes. To be accurate we should say, everything that begins to exist has a cause. The universe–matter–isn’t eternal; God created it.
Science tries to answer when and how the universe came to be.
The general consensus is that a “big bang” created the universe:
“Detailed measurements of the expansion rate of the universe place the Big Bang singularity at around 13.8 billion years ago, which is thus considered the age of the universe” (Big Bang – Wikipedia).
This is when scientists tell us the universe was born. So, even science says our universe, (even if their theory and dates are correct), had a beginning.
However, God didn’t have a beginning. He is the first cause; He is holy. God created everything else that exists.
Every created thing depends on God and He must maintain it. He alone self-exists. God does not suffer entropy.
God exists within our universe, but He also exists outside of it because He created it.
Why is there anything? The human mind struggles to understand how anything exists.
“No one has seen God at any time. The only Son, who is at the Father’s side, has made Him known (John 1:18; 1 John 4:12).”
We cannot discover God unless He reveals Himself. He is spirit and no one has seen God at any time. But God broke through the discernibility barrier: He revealed Himself by taking on human nature in the Person of Jesus Christ:
“He (Jesus) is the image of the invisible God and the firstborn of every creature. For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are in earth, visible and invisible (Colossians 1:15-16).
No one made God. He has self-existed eternally. He created everything else that exists. Because He is spirit and wholly other, we can only know Him when He reveals Himself. And He revealed Himself in the Person of Jesus Christ. You can read more about who God is here.
