We all have questions. Many people wonder who the Holy Spirit is, and if He is even real. We want everyone to understand that God loves you and has provided forgiveness and eternal to all who will accept this free gift. Today I am writing on, “who or what do Christians believe the Holy Spirit is” so that non-Christians can have a grasp on the concepts and Christians can understand that if they are saved, they can’t have committed this unforgivable sin. If you have any questions or concerns, need prayer, or are just someone to speak to, please feel free to reach out to us here at SteepleLess Church.

This topic is extremely important for understanding Christianity because believing incorrectly is something that the Bible says will send the person to hell (Matt. 12:31-2; Mark 3:28-29). When sin is not forgiven then the punishment is hell because God is perfectly morally just in all ways. Blaspheming the Holy Spirit is something that has come up more than a few times when speaking to people and I find that people just hope that they do not do it but do not understand what it means. There also is a sermon that relates to this topic, if you are interested in watching it please click here.

1. Who is the Holy Spirit?

There are many verses in both the Old and New Testaments that describe the Spirit of God. The Holy Spirit in the Bible is described as a person (John 14:6, 14:15-7,16:7-15; Rom 8:26). The Greek language used in these verses shows that the Holy Spirit is not a force or will, but a person. I think that much of the confusion of the Holy Spirit comes from the fact that the Holy Spirit is both a spirit and a person. It is hard for many of us to wrap our heads around how this is possible.

However, the vast majority of people feel as if they have a spirit in addition to having physical bodies. The first time the Holy Spirit is mentioned in the second verse of the Bible where we see Him hovering over the waters that God has created. You can read about who God is here and who Jesus is here.

In the New Testament, the Holy Spirit is shown more clearly than in the Old Testament that He is one of the three persons of God. The Holy Spirit is just as powerful and important as the Father and the Son, for they are One, and plays a role in creation, salvation, and enables Christians to live a righteous and holy life. The book of Acts frequently mentions the Holy Spirit and is sometimes even described as the Acts of the Holy Spirit. This would be a great book to read to better understand the Holy Spirit.

2. What Does the Holy Spirit do?

He plays a role in everything that is done by God and the three persons of God usually have different roles in doing something. For example, when humans pray to God the Father, the Holy Spirit gives us the power to do it through our faith in Jesus Christ. The major action of the Holy Spirit is revealed throughout scripture as coming upon people so they would do the will of God. This is a mutual relationship that God has with humans once they are saved and in the New Testament, this filling of the Holy Spirit is permanent.

The Holy Spirit is permanently in the Christian because the payment for sin was made by Jesus Christ and therefore, we are sinless in the eyes of God when we are saved. For further info on why Jesus needed to die see the answer here by scrolling down to number four.  When the Holy Spirit dwells inside Christians, He helps us understand God’s will and the Bible, encourages us to love God and love others, and allows us to do good works that will bring glory to God. This is why when you see someone who does not act differently after being saved, they are either ignoring the spirit or they are not saved but just think they are. For further info on this read this paper here.

3. Why is the Holy Spirit Important in the Bible for Christians?

Without the Holy Spirit, Christians would have to rely on their nature and faith to do the will of God. Looking at the Old Testament, even the people who are closest to God consistently did things that were against the will of God. The people that have the Holy Spirit in the New Testament permanently, while nowhere near perfect, seem to be much more consistent in their love for God and others and doing good works in faith. Christians can have constant and full contact with God because their body is indwelled by the Holy Spirit.

4. What is Blaspheming Against the Holy Spirit?

This is a sin that can never be forgiven. This is something that has been argued over for two-thousand years because of the importance of understanding this verse. Luckily for us, virtually all agree that those who can repent have not committed this sin. Almost all theologians and denominations believe that this action of blaspheming is hardening the heart of the human, so they are no longer able to repent of their sins. The hardening of the heart is the action of not accepting Jesus for salvation from the sins that have been committed by humans. The major disagreement comes at what time this can be done. Some believe that salvation of a human is always possible in the life of a human and all people can come to God at all times.

Others believe that at some point, which is different for everyone and therefore is immeasurable, a person can deny the Holy Spirit too many times and is therefore unwilling and unable to repent. If a person is willing to repent, then they are able and have therefore not crossed this threshold. Therefore, if the person reading this is worried that they have committed the unforgivable sin but want to repent they do not need to be worried. If you are truly a Christian, meaning you believe in God as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, and accept Jesus’ payment for your sins, then you have not committed this sin and are unable to ever lose the Holy Spirit.

5. Can I Worship the Holy Spirit?

God is three persons in one being. The Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are all fully God, They are One. God is to be worshipped by Christians. The Holy Spirit is God and is, therefore, to be worshipped by Christians. Anyone can also pray to the Holy Spirit because when you pray to God you are praying to all the persons of God. Often, we think of ourselves as praying only to the Father, and that’s okay, I think it just makes it easier because the trinity is a hard concept to understand. Furthermore, anyone who denies that God is Father, Son, and Holy Spirit or adds on any other “gods” is not a Christian.

The Prayer of Salvation

Jesus, I don't know You, and I don't know what Your plan is for me. But thank you for coming to die in my place. I'm sorry for anything I've ever done wrong in my life. I don't understand how You could ever forgive me, but if You really would, I would like to accept your free gift of grace and complete forgiveness. Please come into my life and take control, and help me trust You. In Jesus' name I pray, Amen.
