Why was Jesus crucified? Jesus died for our salvation. That is the answer to your most important question.
Jesus came to save His people from their sins:
“And you shall call His name JESUS, for He will save His people from their sins (Matthew 1:21).
If you think you have sinned too much for Jesus to love you, please read the following article. What Does Jesus Died for Our Sins Mean?
Jesus Was crucified for Our Salvation
For Our Salvation
God the Father sent Jesus, His only Son, to save the world:
“God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved” (John 3:17). You can read about John 3:16 here.
Jesus Died to Fulfill God’s Will
For the Father
Jesus came to do His Father’s will. That will of the Father was to provide sanctification for all who believe in Jesus:
***”Then He (Jesus) said, “See, I have come to do Your will, O God (the Father).” … By this will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all” (Hebrews 10:9-10).
***“You have taken Him (Jesus), who was handed over to you (Jews) by the ordained counsel and foreknowledge of God” (Acts 2:23).
Jesus Removed Our Sin By Dying on the Cross
For Justice
God is holy and just. He can’t overlook sin, so to remove it from us, He laid our sin on the innocent One:***“The Lord God, merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in goodness and truth, keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, but who will by no means clear the guilty” (Exodus 34:6-7).
***“For the transgression of my people he was struck … because he had done no violence, nor was any deceit in his mouth” (Isaiah 53:8-9).
***“Pilate said to them (the Jewish leaders), “Take Him yourselves and crucify Him, for I find no guilt in Him” (John 19:6).
To Fulfill Prophecy
The Prophet Isaiah, who lived and prophesied about seven hundred years before Jesus walked the earth, provided details about Jesus’ crucifixion:
“He (Jesus) was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities; the chastisement of our peace was upon him, and by his stripes (wounds from whips) we are healed…. All of us like sheep have gone astray; each of us has turned to his own way, but the Lord (the Father) has laid on him (Jesus) the iniquity of us all” (Isaiah 53:5-6)
Fulfilling God’s promise to in time defeat Satan through one of Eve’s descendants:
“He (Jesus) will bruise your (Satan’s) head, and you will bruise his heel” (Genesis 3:15).”
To Fulfill the Law
“Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law by being made a curse for us—as it is written, “Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree”— so that the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Jesus Christ … through faith” (Galatians 3:13-14).
To Enter the Most Holy Place
He needed to enter the true Most Holy Place in heaven with His own blood to obtain our eternal redemption:
“But Christ, when He came as a High Priest … by a greater and more perfect tabernacle, not made with hands, that is to say, not of this creation, neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by His own blood, He entered the Most Holy Place once for all, having obtained eternal redemption” (Hebrews 9:11-12).
For Declaring Who He Is
The Son of God:
When the chief priests and officers saw Him, they cried out, “Crucify Him! Crucify Him!” The Jews answered him, “We have a law, and by our law He ought to die, because He made Himself the Son of God (John 19:6-7)!”
The King of the Jews
He (Pilate) said to the Jews, “Here is your King!” But they shouted, “Away with Him (Jesus)! Away with Him! Crucify Him!” Pilate said to them, “Shall I crucify your King?” The chief priests answered, “We have no king but Caesar!” Then he handed Him over to them to be crucified “(John 19:14-16).
The Son of Man
Jesus claimed to be the rightful eternal King who sits at God’s right hand (Daniel 7:13-14; Mark 14:62).
“(Jesus) said, “Listen! We are going up to Jerusalem, and everything … written by the prophets concerning the Son of Man will be accomplished, for He will be handed over to the Gentiles and will be mocked and insulted and spit upon. They will scourge Him and put Him to death, and on the third day He will rise again” (Luke 18:31-33).
The ‘I AM’
He bore the sacred Name of God, and they sought Him to crucify Him:
“Jesus therefore, knowing everything that would happen to Him (crucifixion), went forward (asking), “Whom do you seek?” They answered Him, “Jesus of Nazareth.” Jesus said to them, “I am He.” … When He said, “I am He,” they drew back and fell to the ground” (John 18:4-6)
Jesus was Crucified for Declaring Who He was
Summary
Why was Jesus Crucified? He was crucified for declaring who He was; the Son of God and rightful eternal King who bore the sacred Name of God: ‘I AM.’
God the Father sent Him to bear our sins and provide salvation. He fulfilled the Law by dying nailed to a tree and rising from the dead. Because He died for us, He could enter the true Tabernacle in heaven and offer His own blood. That blood alone achieved our eternal redemption.
