In life’s storms, we seek light. In the Bible, Luke 5 brings such light. It shows us not just tales of old, but sparks of hope for our own dark nights. Today, in our Daily Devotional by Allen J. Huth, we will see how God helps us through the trials and storms of life. Listen to Luke 5 today for encouragement to help you navigate through the storms of life.

Luke 5: 1- 11

Think of Simon, his nets bare, his heart low. Then, Jesus steps in. With a word, an empty net fills. It’s a sign for us: even in our darkest hour, there’s hope, there’s a catch waiting for us, if we dare to cast our nets once more.

Luke 5:12 – 16

We see a man, cast out, his skin marked. He meets Jesus and finds not just a cure, but a welcome back into the arms of his folk. It tells us, no matter how far we feel from hope, from others, there’s a way back.

Luke 5: 17 -26

And then, the man who could not walk, brought to Jesus by friends. He stands, he walks. It’s a nudge to us that faith, our own or that of those who love us, can bring us back to our feet.

Cut to a dad in the ’90s, his heart torn by his son’s misstep. In the quiet, with Luke’s words, he finds a bridge across time. The tales of healing, of hope, they speak into his chaos, offering not just solace but a way through.

So, let Luke 5 be a lamp for us. In our nights full of tears, let’s reach for that spark of faith. Let’s cast our nets, let’s lean on love, and let’s find our path through the storm. For in our toughest times, we’re not alone. We have a guide, a light, and a hope that calls us to rise, to heal, to love.

In Luke 5 the Ministry of Jesus Continues

He calls His first disciples, He cleanses a leper, and heals a paralytic. However, His disciples had a bad night. I have had bad nights too. When you have a bad night, where do you turn?

Luke 5 Commentary by Allen J. Huth

Sometimes life gets in the way of Bible reading. As I turn to my journal entry in 1994, I found I did not read the day after reading Luke 4. It actually took me the weekend to get back to reading Luke on Monday morning. My journal entry on Saturday, March 19 explains why. “A night from hell. We went to one of my brothers to give them some wedding pictures. We arrived home about 11:30 at night with another one of my brothers at my house.

Examples of the Storms of Life

“My oldest son had just been arrested for drinking at his high school. It’s very hard to see your seventeen-year-old son drunk. Terry went ballistic, screaming at him. He was crying loudly and uncontrollably. Terry got so worked up she started throwing up, so I got Jason up to watch that. He cried more. I sat up in his room until he cried himself to sleep, 12:45 a.m.

“At  5 a.m., the phone rang. It was the brother who was at my house and his house was on fire! By 5:20 a.m., we were there to see two firetrucks and ten to fifteen firemen putting out the fire on his porch and garage. He was crying. It started from his grill. We brought the girls home to sleep. It’s now 9:30 a.m. Haven’t talked to Jason, yet. Do not really know what went on last night except he was ticketed by police and suspended from school.”

The next day, Sunday, I wrote this, “In our talk with Jason, he said, ‘I’m not ready to pray and become a Christian.’ What pain for us. Holy Spirit, please call him into Your kingdom. He also said he didn’t want to live here. That’s two, him and Ryan. Like Terry said, what have we done so wrong that our kids don’t want to live in our home and be in our family?”

How to Get Through the Storms of Life

On Monday, I finally got back to reading my Bible (NASB). After reading Luke 5, I wrote, “‘Lord, if You are willing, You can make me clean’, referring to verse 12. You gotta ask.” Then I wrote, “Jesus always got away to pray. I need more and better prayer time.” So that was life at thirty-nine years old in 1994.

In 1995, after reading Luke 5 (NKJV), I wrote, “‘The multitude pressed about Him to hear the word of God’ (v. 1). Imagine that today, people clamoring to hear the Word of God. Bring revival, Lord.” Then I wrote, “Sometimes our labor is not blessed. Simon and his partners ‘toiled all night and caught nothing’ (v. 5). When Jesus blessed their labor, they left it all to follow Christ. What was important changed.”

Interestingly, in 1996, I also had some journal entries about my oldest son, Jason. I was actually reading several chapters in Luke on our way to Texas to see him at his community college in Big Spring, Texas. He was there on a baseball scholarship. I wrote in my journal the day we got home, “We’re home. But we’re the only ones home. Jason is in Big Spring. Shannon flew to Phoenix to stay with Kendra. Ryan is with Scott in Las Vegas. It’s strange to have all of our kids out in different directions.”

Luke 5: 1-16

That day, I read Luke 5:1-16 and wrote, “Jesus can bless our daily work in supernatural ways as He did the fishermen. Lord, bless my work now with a big catch of fish. I need to produce for ABA; ABA needs my production.” That was in reference to the consulting company I was working for at the time. “I will let down the net. Lord, if You are willing, You can.” Then I wrote, “Jesus withdrew to pray. We need quiet time with the Lord.”

I finished Luke 5 the next day, reading verses 17-39 (NKJV). I wrote, “‘When He saw their faith’ (v. 20). Jesus acts when He sees faith in us. I need to show my faith to Jesus. I have been afraid to pursue my dream maybe due to lack of faith. I’ve been paralyzed like the man on the bed. Jesus, are You saying to me, ‘Rise up and walk” (v. 23)? Are You saying, ‘Do not be independent, be a part of the church, go to the church, ask your friends for help?’”

Digging Deeper

Sometimes I like to share my prayers. I will share my prayer surrounding this chapter, “I’m very confused. Ezra Project, Kelly Baseball, ABA, financial success vs. ministry, writing, speaking, travel. What do I want to do? What is my plan? What results do I want to have when my life is over. How will I be happy and help those around me be happy?

“I want to develop a plan, a course for my life again, accomplish some things. Lord, help me do it. And do it with Your goals and Your purposes in mind. Lead as You have in the past and protect me from wrong decisions.” I wrote in large, capital letters, “LORD, HELP ME.”

Maybe, as we read through the Gospel of Luke, life is getting in your way, as it was in mine when I was thirty-nine, forty, and forty-one. I will pray for you.

A Prayer for Comfort

Father, we thank You we can be comforted by Your Word. As I have shared in my own journals, life sometimes gets in the way. It gets messy. I pray for any of those where life is getting in their way as they are going through Luke today; touch their hearts. By reading Your Word, give them confidence. Build their trust in You.

Simon Peter had a bad night, could not catch any fish, but You were there. I had a night from hell. It was a bad night, but You were there. What was important to Simon Peter changed. Change what is important to us. And, if You are calling us to let our nets down on the other side of the boat, to do something different, make it clear to us by giving us a big catch and changing our priorities. To God be the glory. Great things You have done, You are doing, and You will do. In Jesus’ name, amen.

The Prayer of Salvation

Jesus, I don't know You, and I don't know what Your plan is for me. But thank you for coming to die in my place. I'm sorry for anything I've ever done wrong in my life. I don't understand how You could ever forgive me, but if You really would, I would like to accept your free gift of grace and complete forgiveness. Please come into my life and take control, and help me trust You. In Jesus' name I pray, Amen.
