CHAPTER 12 :: Who is Jesus Like?
He Is like David (Mark 3:7-12)
Storybook
Jesus, a Man of peace, often responded to opposition by withdrawing, often to the sea. But the Jews spotted Him as He left. Their jaws dropped as they saw the crowds following Him.
They shook their heads and frowned, wondering, “How can we arrest him when He is with thousands of his followers?” These followers came from every part of what was once Israel during the reigns of Kings David and Solomon. Mark highlighted this detail to emphasize that Jesus came to save all of Israel.
The Jews continued, “No wonder they follow him. He teaches them and heals many, casting out their demons.” They grumbled, “Doesn’t he see that this multitude is accursed? Why does he care for them? After scratching their heads, they cynically concluded, “It just shows his lack of discernment.”
Summary
When possible and not vital to His message and mission, Jesus sought peace while avoiding confrontation.
Jesus reminded people of the Bible’s record of the extent of King David’s reign.
He is like Moses (Mark 3:13-19)
“Then the LORD came down on Mount Sinai, to the top of the mountain; and the LORD called Moses to the top of the mountain, and Moses went up” (Exodus 19:20).
Soon, Jesus left the masses and the sea behind and ascended a mountain, while the leaders lagged. As He climbed, He reminded them of another former Jewish leader: Moses. Just as Moses appointed leaders to help him (Exodus 18), Jesus selected twelve disciples to preach and cast out demons.
Summary
Jesus reminded people of Moses when He ascended this mountain.
