Why Do I Feel Guilty?

good news of jesus

Why do I feel guilty all the time? We have all been there and some of us live in guilt every day. There is a solution! Let’s discuss this important question.

“There is none righteous, no, not one; They have all turned aside … together they have become worthless; there is no one who does good, no, not one” (Romans 3:10-12).

Reasons for Guilt

Feeling guilty is a universal human emotion. Sometimes we feel guilty when we’ve intentionally done something wrong, and the reason is apparent. Other times, we may experience guilt because our words or actions unintentionally hurt someone, or when we fail to meet our own expectations or those of others. We can also feel shame when we don’t conform to cultural norms

Healthy Guilt

Guilt is a healthy emotion when justified because it prompts us to take appropriate actions. When warranted, guilt can motivate us to mend our relationships and improve our behavior. It should lead us to develop greater empathy for others and, when appropriate, for ourselves. Since we all make mistakes, guilt can guide us toward healthy resolutions.

Perhaps our guilty feelings are justified. If so, it’s crucial to stop our harmful behavior, acknowledge our mistakes, and, if possible, make amends. Sometimes, all we can do is admit our fault and apologize.

Unhealthy Guilt

Sometimes, guilt can be unhealthy. People may feel overwhelmed by guilt even when they have not done anything wrong. In such cases, it is essential to forgive ourselves. If it becomes harmful to our mental well-being, we should seek help from others, including professionals.

Forgiving People

At times, we struggle to forgive ourselves because we have yet to forgive others who have wronged us. If we cannot forgive those who have hurt us, how can we expect them to forgive us? When we’re being fair, our better selves may hold this against us, leading us to feel guilty appropriately.

Guilt Before God

There is a common feeling of justified guilt that many people experience. This feeling isn’t always tied to a specific immoral action we’ve committed, which often leads us to dismiss it. We may misattribute this guilt, believing we are guilty due to some human reason—perhaps something our ancestors did—or we might feel guilty for an unknown reason.

Many struggle with guilt because we all fall short before God. Each person is born in need of a Savior. Our conscience reminds us that God is righteous and holy, and no matter how hard we try, our best efforts cannot restore our relationship with Him.

Denying Guilt

Some people try to deny the root cause of their guilt. This denial may stem from philosophical reasons, vanity, or an attempt to avoid responsibility. They reject the idea that God is their Creator, Sovereign, and Judge. Ultimately, God will hold all of us accountable for how we have lived our lives and whether we have placed our faith in Jesus, the Savior He sent.

Solution for Guilt Before God| John 3:17

If you’re feeling guilty but are unsure why, consider the following. The Bible tells us,
“For God did not send His Son (Jesus) into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved. He who believes in Him is not condemned; but he who does not believe is condemned already because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God” (John 3:17-18).

Conclusion
Guilt is a universal human emotion. There are two types of guilt: justified guilt and unhealthy guilt. Justified guilt is healthy because it helps us improve ourselves, make amends, and forgive others and ourselves. Meanwhile, unhealthy guilt can harm our mental well-being, and if it overwhelms us, we should seek help from others.

Common to everyone is the feeling of guilt before God. Our unhealthy tendency is to suppress this guilt by denying our responsibility before God instead of accepting God’s solution. However, this healthy guilt leads us to embrace God’s solution to this guilt by believing in Jesus as our Savior.

Jesus, I don't know You, and I don't know what Your plan is for me. But thank you for coming to die in my place. I'm sorry for anything I've ever done wrong in my life. I don't understand how You could ever forgive me, but if You really would, I would like to accept your free gift of grace and complete forgiveness. Please come into my life and take control, and help me trust You. In Jesus' name I pray, Amen.
