What is the wrath of God? You have asked a great question. Let’s see what the Bible has to say to us.

Part 1-The Problem of Sin

“But because of your stubbornness and unrepentant heart you are storing up wrath for yourself in the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God, who WILL RENDER TO EACH PERSON ACCORDING TO HIS DEEDS (Romans 2:5).”

God is Righteous Holy and Good

Righteousness is an attribute of God and relates to His Holiness and goodness. Therefore, He cannot tolerate sin and rebellion. The verse above says that people with stubborn and unrepentant hearts store up wrath for themselves in the day of (God’s) wrath.

“Who keeps lovingkindness for thousands, who forgives iniquity, transgression and sin; yet He will by no means leave the guilty unpunished, visiting the iniquity of fathers on the children and on the grandchildren to the third and fourth generations (Exodus 34:7).”

God’s Wrath Toward Sin

Lovingkindness and forgiveness are God’s first reactions to sinners. But, because of His just nature and His holiness, He cannot leave the guilty unpunished.

God’s Salvation Through Christ

But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. Much more then, having now been justified by His (Jesus’) blood, we shall be saved from the wrath of God through Him (Romans 5:9).

How Evil is Sin?

  • It’s Worse than We Know

Sin is a problem; it’s more severe and eviler than it appears. Why is there evil in the world? Why would an omniscient God allow a Satan, a Judas, and a Hitler to personify evil? People have asked these questions since God created the world. The presence of sin is the leading reason people say they won’t come to God. He has the power to eliminate evil, so they blame Him.

  • God Suffered its Consequences

Though we don’t know why God allows sin and evil, we know He didn’t keep Himself from its consequences. The problem of evil is so crucial that He sent His Son to be cruelly tortured and die for our sins.

Sin’s Severity Matches its Solution

  • Only One Solution

Its full extent is unrevealed, but God is just and righteous. So, the issue matches the intensity of His solution. Jesus had to die to provide salvation—and there was no other way:

  • Our Sin was Placed on Jesus

“And He (Jesus) was saying, “Abba! Father! All things are possible for You; remove this cup from Me; yet not what I will, but what You will (Mark 14:36).” God poured out His wrath against sin when He placed our sin on Jesus. Yet we are saved because of Jesus’ voluntary sacrifice: Therefore, when He comes into the world, He says,
“SACRIFICE AND OFFERING YOU HAVE NOT DESIRED, BUT A BODY YOU HAVE PREPARED FOR ME (Jesus); IN WHOLE BURNT OFFERINGS AND sacrifices FOR SIN YOU HAVE TAKEN NO PLEASURE.“THEN I SAID, ‘BEHOLD, I HAVE COME (IN THE SCROLL OF THE BOOK IT IS WRITTEN OF ME) TO DO YOUR WILL, O GOD  (Hebrews 10:5-7).?”

Jesus Paid for Our Sins

So why will unbelievers suffer for eternity? If God couldn’t spare His own Son the torture Jesus had to face to solve the sin problem, He can’t be just and spare unbelieving people who reject His sin remedy. His Son Jesus paid the sin debt for us. Everyone is trapped on this burning island, but God has provided a bridge to salvation (Revelation 20:11-15). We cross that bridge by believing in Jesus’ Name (John 1:12).

The Prayer of Salvation

Jesus, I don't know You, and I don't know what Your plan is for me. But thank you for coming to die in my place. I'm sorry for anything I've ever done wrong in my life. I don't understand how You could ever forgive me, but if You really would, I would like to accept your free gift of grace and complete forgiveness. Please come into my life and take control, and help me trust You. In Jesus' name I pray, Amen.
