Hope Definition

Hope comes alive on the written page or as spoken word. A massive number of words must be included in defining hope. The list would include expectant, promise, belief, anticipation, faith, endurance, glory, and assumption.

When Hope enters our world, an expectancy of promise of better things permeates our being. We experience the anticipation of improvement in our situation, the energy and availability of the power to believe, and to hold on by faith.

Hope lifts us from loneliness and despair. It energizes us and makes a dull day explode into a day of promise and joy and opens our eyes to see and our ears to hear.
Hope is the most splendid of words because it means life and the promise of eternal life. It is ours to believe and receive through Jesus Christ. When grace happens, Christ enters.  Christ in you, the hope of glory!

What is a Better Word for Hope?

Is there a better word than Hope? Obviously, we word lovers, or logophiles, feel a personal attachment to words. Some words take on a life of their own. For me, it is the loving affinity for the words hope, glory, joyous, and transcending.

A better word for hope? Perhaps, that would be a word that puts it into action. For this, I choose Trust. Trust means relying on hope. Trust means putting on your boots and allowing hope to become a happening, an occasion, an act of service.

Relying on hope, on the promise of wonder, the joy of fulfillment – becomes trust. Trust believes it will happen and steps out in faith.

Hope becomes trust when we choose the upper road and leave an addiction, an unhealthy relationship, or a slovenly lifestyle.

The hope opened our eyes, paired up with trust, which combined to rely on the faith to believe it could happen. This catalytic combo ultimately leads to taking the first step, leaving the mire, and setting us free – a transforming spiritual experience.

What Is the Power of Hope?

“May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope.” Romans 15:13. xn
God promises not to leave us or forsake us. It is because of His presence and power in our lives that we can have hope. He is our hope.
Hope:

  • is the belief that circumstances will get better. Not a wish to get better – an actual belief that it will be better.
  • grows and becomes knowledge that things will get better, no matter how big or small are our needs.
  • is the belief that things will work out, especially when it seems otherwise.
  • helps us stay calm and peaceful.
  • believes we will get through it.
  • remembers and reminds us of our history with God. We recall the past experiences when God opened doors for us, protected us, and showed us the way. This power of hope gives us power for the day.
  • reduces feelings of helplessness.
  •  increases happiness, reduces stress, and improves quality of life. Powerful!

Why is Hope so Important?

The cares and burdens of life can and will be heavy. The load leads us to be anxious and filled with unrest. Grief, accompanied by loneliness, enters our lives at various times to add to the burden.

Pressures of job and family responsibilities may beat us down. Why is Hope so important? We desperately need help. We need light. We need encouragement. We need hope.
We need someone to walk with us. We need the dark clouds parted and light to enter our world. Hope combines with belief to give purpose, a sense of joy, and a reason for living.
Hope gives us stability and leads us to understand the purpose of life.

Hope defeats negativity, removes despair, breaks down barriers. The world is brighter, our step lighter, sin loses its power, when Hope reigns.

Hope is so important that God gifts us with the eternal gift of glory and hope. Even the Psalmist of old cried out “My hope is in you.” We join him with grateful hearts that Jesus, the hope of the world, has now come — Christ in you, the hope of glory!

What Does Hope Mean in the Bible?

The Bible sets forth the central message that Hope leads us to the assurance that God is God. That Jesus is the Savior, extending salvation and eternal life to all who believe.

That our Hope for living eternally with God is a positive and sound promise from God Himself. It is based on the faithfulness of God.

The Bible teaches that Jesus Christ died for our sins, rose from death and the grave, and ascended into heaven to prepare a place for us.

All of Christianity rests in the Hope that is ours when we believe that Jesus Christ is God in the flesh, dying for our sins, and that He now reigns at the right hand of God. By faith, we trust in this hope that is ours, because God loves us so much.

Hope based on God and not man is blessed assurance. “But as many as received Him(Jesus); to them he gave the right to become children of God, even to those who believe in His name.” John 1:12

What is the Spiritual Meaning of Hope?

In the Bible hope means the confident expectation of what God has promised, and its strength is in His faithfulness. We can rely on God’s promises because He is omniscient, omnipotent, and omnipresent. His name is truth. Based on God’s faithfulness, our hope in his promises is assured and secured.

Spiritual hope, or perhaps better referred to as Biblical hope, is not a mere desire for something good to happen. It is confident expectation based on the Word of God and his promises. His word is truth: and we can rely on it.
Hebrews 11:1 “Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.”
Romans 15:13 “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope.”

How Do You Express Hope?

There are rather flippant ways to express hope: “I hope tomorrow’s a good hair day.” “I hope I gave enough correct answers for a passing grade.” There are sincere expressions of hope we may express to others as an encouragement, or those we express much like a prayer. How do you express hope?

Think how many things you have “hoped for” today. Hope is a constant in our lives. Are you a hopeful person? Do you look for a silver lining, a rainbow, answer to prayer?
Hope comes in every size, is expressed in every language, is lived expectantly, and sometimes questioned.

It is one of the smallest words in our vocabulary yet has a meaning that envelops the universe. The feeling pushes us onward when all else fails. It lifts heavy hearts when we are on the brink of giving up. It opens our eyes to see the glory of the unseen Eternal God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
Hope gives us impetus to take yet another breath, to try once more, to forgive yet again, to accept forgiveness and the gift of eternal life through Jesus. “Christ in you, the hope of glory.”

Can You Live Without Hope?

As I pondered this question that was posed to me – Can you Live Without Hope? – I felt the coldness of abject despair. No hope? Our God is the God of Hope. “Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing so that you will abound in hope, by the power of the Holy Spirit.”

Nothing is so void, so dark, so filled with despair, than the thought of having no hope. Hope gives joy, peace, a sense of belonging, a future, a friend, a helper, a savior, life itself.
God offers us the greatest of hope with the indwelling of the Holy Spirit to fill us with His hope.

He gives us purpose, joy, light, promise, opportunity, peace, energy, desire, forgiveness – all through the transaction of receiving Christ as Savior.

We must reach out to those living without hope.  Many are in dire circumstance, alone, filled with despair. We have the answer when we know and belong to Christ.
So that being justified by His grace we would be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life.” Titus 3:7

Is There Hope For Me?

The greatest news in the world: ” There is hope for me.”
Whatever the circumstances – critical illness, depression, uncertainty – the offer of hope is the greatest gift. It lifts our spirits. It gives us inner sustenance, joy, and energy. We have a new outlook – new life. A new opportunity.

This good news, by the grace of God, is our only hope. He freely gives and forgives – graces us. That grace gives us the greatest joy – ‘Christ in you, the hope of glory.’
Yes! Yes! There is hope for you! There is hope for me! It is immeasurable, abounding, enveloping, uplifting us out of our deepest despair. It is God – reaching down lifting us up.

When the darkness overtakes me
When my enemy surrounds me
There is only one who saves me
My hope is you.
When the road I’m on is sorrow
And answers all seem hollow
I still know who to follow
My hope is you, Jesus
Ever since the day you found me
Your love has overwhelmed me
With your mercy all around me
My hope is you.

Yes, there is hope for you – and me!
